I think this review was too harsh, though the game is quite short. Its not a perfect game, but it is a good one. The tone of the reviewer was too negative in my opinion, although it was not a bad review altogether. I'd give the review a 6.5/10

hm, "it only leaves you wanting more" wait, isnt that the traditional Nintendo trademark?, isnt that why we have 20 different marios/zeldas/pokemons/donkey kongs..

Stay tuned for Pilotwings - Hawaii Island

I got this game and I have to say, I still think it is pretty amazing. It is a fun game with a good bit of exploration, and if that is what you're looking for, you should definitely get his game.

I think it's pretty fun. I agree with the score but it's not at all a bad game. It's just like wii sports, but for the 3ds. Theirs really not many other games out besides SSFV.

I'll probably get it when the price drops. Looking forward to Mario, Zelda, Kid Icarus, etc.

Pilotwings on the N64 was awesome. Hey Justin, would I love this game?

@mathi4s: We'd have loved to do video reviews for those games as well, but they were reviewed by freelancers rather than by our in-house team.

This is a great review, Pilotwings Resort doesn't look like the type of game I would enjoy playing.

Meh, I'm still super excited for this game. I just enjoy flying around and striving for high scores. Luckily, I'm also picking up Street Fighter with it. :]

    @silversix_
it could be fun if they had more variety. Also they should not have used the wii sports island, it would have been cooler if they had a much larger environment and a different art style

I have to side with silversix on this one. Games like Shogun total war 2 and Dawn of war 2 Retribution get only written reviews while crap like this gets a video review. Its kinda disapointing.

  • silversix_

Is this a joke or games like that are even being released? The most boring video review i've seen on GS since 03. This game is just WOOOW seriously????!!!???

So, he does know this is a handheld title, right? And that many handheld titles try to capitalize on the "pick up and play" mentality? And that handhelds are innately different than console titles? Quite a few good things to say about this for a 6.5. Sounds like it should at least be a 7 or higher. But then again, I really enjoy the flying missions on Wii Sports Resort, so maybe it's just me.
I'll be getting this and enjoying the hell out of it come Sunday.

  • WarioBro64

    Posted Mar 25, 2011 9:22 pm PT

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds as though this game deserves a bit of a higher score than 6.5! Sure, it is a relatively short game, but if you take into account that it's a launch title, that's a pretty forgivable aspect.

The games with miis always get bad reviews. it sucks for the miis

  • JordanElek

Sounds like a great portable game with good value for those who enjoy maxing out a game rather than just quickly blowing through it.

Kinda seems like Justin was treating this like a console game, though, when it seems to be tailored pretty well to a portable system. There's a pretty big difference.

  • Gelugon_baat

    Posted Mar 25, 2011 7:10 pm PT

That Justin says this is inferior to its predecessor is a damning conclusion indeed. "Why buy this?" I would say to 3DS owners.

That said, Eurogamer and Official Nintendo Magazine are very, very forgiving with their reviews of this game.

I love the SNES and N64 Pilotwings, and for what I saw in this review, I'll enjoy this one too, but I think they should make a wii version with leaderbords and everything.

Just like the DS, the 3DS's launch titles are a little weak, but still fun to play and in a shorter amount of time than DS, the 3DS will be boasting with ALLOT of Triple A titles like the DS. Super Street Fighter 4 will mostly be great, lets just hope the reviewer(if its not tom) doesnt throw it off and give it a low score for a stupid reason. also Rayman 2 has been remaked allot of times but the 3DS might make it better

  • Kenshin0011

    Posted Mar 25, 2011 4:27 pm PT

This looks fun, and I wanna play it, but it should have come with the 3DS, just like Wii sports came with the Wii. I dont want to pay retail for this small of a content game

  • Tyralyon

When you started talking about the scores, I immediately thought aha, finally one can compare scores with other players the way one can on XBL and PSN. Really weird that they didn't implement that. Would add a lot to this game. Now it just seems kinda boring. I've played the previous two, but don't think I'll bother with this.

  • StSk8ter29

I really wish they would have added more islands. Pilotwings 64 had three, including one huge island that resembled the USA. This game just seems lacking.

  • JustPlainLucas

    Posted Mar 25, 2011 1:37 pm PT

Well, I was really looking forward to this one as I loved PilotWings 64, but I should have expected it wasn't going to be much new given the fact that the island came from Wii Sports Resort.

It's weird that the launch line-up of both the DS and 3DS seem to be rather underwhelming. Now, the DS turned out to be one of the finest systems ever (so, so many awesome games), but it took its time. Hopefully, we won't have to wait long for the cIassics (OoT 3D isn't that far off, and Layton is should be here soon).

Mediocre! This is why I get bored with Nintendo titles quick. Looks like a draw and then nothing. There will be plenty of titles similar to this that will be released in the future with fewer big name titles being released. After I bought my DS, I found this to be the issue. Huge selection of games, but most lack quality and a real draw to play.

It sounds as though the numbered score is lower than it should be, if you enjoy replaying missions to get high scores. Since content that's perfect for short bursts of play is exactly what I want from a handheld game, I think that I'll pick this up tomorrow night.

looks decent enough, I'd have my mom play it or something, personally i want something a little more complex with a higher challenge and longevity

Could have been good as a pack-in title, like Wii Sports. It shows off the tech, is good in short bits, but not overall worth the price of a proper retail release

It was fun at Best Buy and the 3D looked great, but I was wondering whether it would have real substance. I still want to play it but 40 bucks for a ~2 hour game is not gonna fly.

Pilotwings looks like one of the weaker launch titles, so the score is not very surprising. I do agree with the review, and I might buy this game.
