Mind the Language

David ASKS:

I appreciate games like Bulletstorm and Gears of War for having a language filter. Could word get out to developers that not all of us gamers who play M-rated games want to be subjected to foul language? I know I'd certainly be purchasing more games if this filter were included in them.

OXM SAYS:

Consider the word spread, David. Currently, Epic Games seems like the developer most aggressive about including this feature in its games (they produced both Bulletstorm and the Gears of War series), but as the Xbox 360's audience grows larger and larger thanks to Kinect, it's possible devs will be compelled to consistently provide parents with more options when they're purchasing games for their kids. Or themselves for that matter.

COMMENTS:

Greaseman, my son doesn't play M rated games. I don't let him. He plays the Lego games, Kinectimals and we play Portal 2 co-op together sometimes. But at 8:30 PM when he's supposed to be asleep, or when I wake up at 6:30 on Saturday morning (things you do when you're a gamer Dad - as Ryan will now find out) to play MY games like Crysis 2, ME2, Black Ops, RDR or whatever (while he's supposed to be asleep, mind you - but like the mini-ninja he is, he might be sitting at the top of the stairs listening), it would be nice to not need headphones every time. Kids repeat everything they hear. That's all I'm saying. He's going to hear it eventually somewhere, I realize that, but with a filter on I don't have to worry about it just yet - and with the filter off you can play exactly how you want to play. We both win.

And Psycho - thanks - everything changes once the little ears are around. Even what you yell when someone cheap-shots you in multiplayer. :)

So people have no problems watching the excessive blood and gore (and nudity) in today's M-rated games, but they have a problem with bad language? You don't want your "curious 7 year old" to repeat bad words, but its OK for him to repeat the violence? If you don't like strong language, you shouldn't be playing M-rated games at all because the violence/blood/nudity far outweighs any bad language.
So hey, lets take the filter thing a step further, instead of weapons characters can have teddy bears, and instead of shooting bullets they shoot flowers, and and instead of blood, they'll have candy come out of them.

Phen0m24: That's actually a spot on defense. I agree with you a hundred percent. Your defense scenario is actually reason enough to implement a filter to mature language within mature games. You provided a very different insightful perspective to a single bachelor.

Sku11y: "Why do scumbags like you have to be dicks to everyone cause it doesnt make you any better." I think you just answered your own question. Maybe because I'm a supposed scumbag I act like a dick. Connect the damn dots to your own stupid rhetorical question. It makes me plenty better compare to your stupid stick up for the little guy defense. Get your righteous high somewhere else you pusswagon.

Hey all, I second David's comment.. With a curious 7 year old that I would rather not have repeating stuff, it would be nice to NOT have to wear headphones when he's in bed and not quite asleep yet. Especially stuff like Bad Company 2 with the NPC's screaming - which is annoying. Filters are awesome, Black Ops has one which was nice, if only EA would reciprocate.. Having a toggle lets folks that want it have it, and those of us with kids can toggle it off. Everyone wins. Thanks!!!

Why is he a pusswagon cause he thinks differently about language. Why do scumbags like you have to be dicks to everyone cause it doesnt make you any better. It makes you little cry baby bitches for complaining about someone else. So leave him alone you worthless shit.

David stop being such a pusswagon. Whaaa! Whaaa! you want me to call the whaaaambulance for you. Do us all a favor and don't buy mature games anymore. It's rated mature for a reason. Apparently you're not mature enough to play these kind of games since you complain like a little girl about such a stupid thing. Cheers.
