Rage online pass locks out singleplayer content

The increasingly popular online pass - which typically requires second-hand buyers to cough up an extra fee for online multiplayer - is being used by Rage developer Id Software to restrict access to singleplayer content. Dotted throughout the gameworld are sewer hatches, which are only accessible to those who bought the game new. "Those hatches are all over," creative director Tim Willits told Eurogamer. "Most people never find them…It's outside the main path. We're not detracting from anything."

A few years from now there

A few years from now there won't be any second hand sales for computer games. Even though I buy new games (when they hit budget prices) I still sell the old games that I don't want any more, in order to purchase those new games. I will undoubtably end up buying less games as a result. Still, that shouldn't affect games sales as more people, who usually buy used games, will be forced to buy new... Either that or more people will turn to buying pirated games.

I do hope this will be

I do hope this will be heavily advertised, both to consumers and to stores - it seems like it's a disaster in the making for both parties, with customers returning copies to shops when they find out they don't have the entire game. Will there even be a "Project 10 dollar" type code, for those who do buy the game second hand? Because if not, they may as well just tie the serial to an email address, or use Steamworks.

I've just cancelled my

I've just cancelled my preorder - as a protest vote.

what about those that don't

what about those that don't have the internet and buy second hand? They might not even be aware about the fact you can buy something to unlock multiplayer access. I can see this slowly spiralling into the situation where people are gonna have to buy an extra code in the shop when they buy the game 2nd hand.

Gamestop'll be laughing then.

Sadly, they'll be the only ones.
