'Idol' Top 3 Results: A Little Bit Country, An Even Littler Bit Rock 'N' Roll

Posted Thu May 19, 2011 6:44pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

You have to wonder why producer Nigel Lythgoe even bothered to launch a country talent competition, "CMT's Next Superstar," on the CMT network this year. He already has a country talent competition. It's called "American Idol." Because its final two contestants are...country singers Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery. Yee haw.

OK, I have nothing against country music, and I think both Lauren and Scotty excel in their own styles within the genre and could have major careers in Nashville. But the elimination of raspy rebel girl Haley Reinhart this week means next week's finale is going to be a pretty ho-hum affair. Haley the wild child would have brought excitement--a duet with Gaga? a jazz jam with Casey Abrams?--not to mention a real element of suspense. A finale showdown between either of this season's chosen ones, Scotty or Lauren, and underdog Haley would have been a fight of Lambert-vs.-Allen proportions (that is, excellent television), not to mention it would have featured a vaster array of musical styles. But now it's country vs. country, apples vs. apples. Is it really going to be all that thrilling to find out who wins next week? Let's just call it a tie, give them both the record deals we know they're going to get anyway, and watch "The Voice" instead.

It's clear that this was the producers' plan from the beginning--Scotty was glowingly mentioned in some of Nigel's pre-Season 10 promo interviews, and Lauren was aggressively pimped throughout the season, ever since her first audition when Steven Tyler called her "The One." The powers-that-be really wanted these country kids, and I do mean KIDS--this year the age limit was lowered to 15 (the tender age Lauren was when she first auditioned), and in interviews Nigel frequently bragged about the caliber of this season's youngest singers. He also seemed to push Lauren and Scotty together every chance he got, having them sing cutesy duets and encouraging Ryan Seacrest to interrogate them about their (non-existent) romance. Meanwhile, Haley was thrown under the bus so much, I was beginning to wonder if this show was sponsored by Greyhound.

So, Nigel has gotten his wish. An all-country finale, a 16-year-old versus a 17-year-old. Congrats, Mr. Lythgoe.

However, Nigel should be careful what he wishes for. While Scotty and Lauren are obviously very popular, not everyone in America likes country music. Ninety-five million votes were cast this week, and some of those millions did go to Haley. So I wouldn't be surprised if, now that Haley's gone, some "Idol" viewers just decide to sit out the finale, and as a result "Idol's" ratings slump during all-important Sweeps Week. Nigel better try to get Aerosmith back on the phone and see if they'll reconsider performing next Wednesday.

But anyway, kudos to Haley for making it much, much farther than anyone, probably even Haley herself, ever imagined, and for taking the news of her elimination this week in her usual shrug-it-off stride. "I rocked it out and I had a blast," she said of her bumpy "Idol" run, before rocking it out on a swan-song performance of "Bennie & The Jets" that was more exciting than probably anything we will actually see on the finale next week.

And it does seem like Haley has one "Idol" big-wig in her corner--Universal Records' Jimmy Iovine, who arranged to have her sing the unreleased Lady Gaga ballad "You & I" a couple weeks ago and praised her throughout the season--so we may not have heard the last from her yet. Considering the incredible tenacity she demonstrated on this show, one day she may still Reinhart herself right onto the Billboard charts.

Parker out.

I didn’t know America liked so much country. I thought as a nation we were more artistically and musically diverse.

It’s so ironic that Lauren got into the finale with the song “I Hope You Dance” – a very popular and well known country song – and the SAME song that Scotty (Mr. Country supposedly) didn’t know the words to and forgot the lyrics to during Hollywood Week. I miss Simon now more than ever. Scotty would have (and should have) been gone a long time ago.

I’m Speechless. This proves to me how much influence producers and judges have over these results. They were panned as early favorites from the beginning, got plenty of air time and back story, never had a bad critique (nothing but pimping!), although they were deserving of some constructive criticism many times, and look, here they are in the final 2. Im not saying they don’t deserve it, they are talented and nice people, but I feel like there were better entertainers, singers, performers in the top 13. Popularity contest, at its best! I will be watching the finale expecting to be bored, but hopefully they both prove me wrong.

    Good bye growling and yodeling!
Whew what a look on her face when she got kicked out! LOL
However, she will have a career anyway. Don't fret Haley Lovers. There will be a CD release that you can all treasure. Boo-Hoo.

Week after week for so many seasons, your comments about American Idol were mostly negative, Lindsey.
Don't you realize you make money because of American Idol?

Haley got this far on pure talent alone. She had to fight her way through trying to prove to america she was good enough when the judges were biased and the producers never showed any of her personal life or back story. I will be looking forward to seeing her in the future because i strongly believe she will be one of the more successful ones of this season.

    HALEY VOTED OFF??????!!!!!!!!!!
THE BEST SINGER BY FAR GETS SENT HOME?????????
    WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!
    I'm done with Idol.
Idol may have been able to get away with this insanity in the past but Idol ain't the only game in town anymore.
We have XFACTOR with Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul reunited to look forward to - AND TO WATCH INSTEAD OF IDOL.
I will never watch another episode of Idol and nothing they do will ever change my mind about that.
Idol is for conservative country southerners who vote based on social/political issues INSTEAD OF TALENT.
    THEY CAN HAVE IDOL.
The big winner tonight was SIMON COWELL!
    GO X FACTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can not WAIT until the day James Durbin and Haley Reinhart are on stage at the Grammy's accepting their awards and Lauren Alaina is sitting on her couch watching. It is total @#$%. Nigel wanted an all country finale SINCE THE BEGINNING. I've never been one to doubt the voting system on Idol. I am a HUGE fan of it but now that all the most AMAZING talents have gone one after another (Paul, Pia, Casey, James, Haley) I am highly starting to doubt weather it's rigged. I voted my FINGERS OFF for Haley and James for WEEKS over a hundred times and I know others have done the same. I just don't get how this has happened. It's just not imaginable to me.

So what do we get America? A boring, predictable finale.

    Way to go.

I think it's pretty telling that of the top 25 AI Season 10 itunes downloads, 13 belong to Haley and James (check Lyndsey's blog). Just sayin'.

I thought Haley was going to be eliminated a long time ago, and I'm glad she made it this far. Of the two girls left, I wished she had made it to the finale. Though I have a feeling no matter what, Scotty's going to win. Guess we'll see...

Like Haley said after she did her amazing swan song,",We aint heard the last of her!!" She was the only reason I kept watching. American Idol is now Country Idol. The votes are going to be a lot lower next week. I will buy your music Haley.

I love that when Haley was singing Bennie & The Jets, that she said that Randy and J-Lo were "so spaced out"! Too funny and true! : ) Oh sigh that she's gone. We'll see her again though.

I'm not a fan of country music, but the autism community was very upset when James did not get through last week, seeing that the brat Haley who could not handle an ounce of criticism got sympathy votes from otherwise James' fans (thinking he was safe). And then her attitude when James was singing that read, "Yeah, I'm safe, you (my biggest competition) is gone, and I'm going to win Idol." There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. I know a lot of people in the autism community who threw their votes to Lauren this week. Personally I was tired of the growls and screaming . She messed up the lyrics last night, too. But seeing her face when Lauren's name was called said it all to me--she was not expecting that at all. It was her arrogance and her sense of entitlement that did her in. I didn't feel like Lauren was being "pimped up" at all. Did you see Nigel earlier in the season when Haley did that song--can't remember it, maybe it was Benny & the Jets? It creeped me out. I've felt she has been his pet from the beginning. Funny how people can see the same show and get totally different vibes.

Why even have the finale?? We know who the winner is already. Boring country finale, no suspense. If I'm going to fall asleep, I'd rather do it reading a book.

I agree that Haley would have made the final a bit more exciting. I wanted a rock vs. country final. While I admired Haley for her growth as a singer and determination, I just really did not warm up to her as a whole. She will have a good career, though. Of the 3, I think Haley and Scotty are better prepared to handle the ups and downs of the business. Lauren is a great singer, no doubt but I think the pressure would be too much for her. So in that sense, I hope Scotty wins.
