Comment

I appreciate it that my works received this award. I am very pleased. ANIMA is a dance animation in which I aimed to express life = anima. This work is structured with about 1500 individual drawings. I tried to see to what extent I could represent a sense of being alive with simple expression in which a human being is just moving.

Reason for Award

This work is so to speak an experimental work which was created for the aim of making the artist himself learn possibilities of hand drawing animation. The result of this trial and error is a powerful dance animation which has been done masterfully and has never been seen before. The powerful expression which can only be done by a young artist still in his 20s ignores the dark tone of its image-plane and does not bore the viewer. We look forward to his development in the future and further experimental work by this artist who has challenged various presentations and extrapolated results.

11 Q&A

Q1
How old were you when you "created" something first time in your life? At that time, what did you create, and what kind of medium did you use?
A1
I have drawn pictures since I was small. I still have some pictures I drew when I went to kindergarten, like dinosaurs. I loved dinosaurs and I often drew them observing a pictorial book.
Q2
What kind of tools or medium do you use now? Please tell us the reason why you choose them.
A2
When I draw a picture in analog way, I would use pencils and acrylic colors which I got a hang of them when I studied for entrance examination and when I was at school. Other than that, I am fond of using painting tools with which I can draw or paint in every detail. I would use Photoshop or After Effects when I create digital works. These are also I have learned how to use at school.
Q3
If you could get "dream tools/medium" for your creation, what do you wish to get?
A3
I am not very picky about tools. I enjoy creating with using my own initiatives in inconvenient situations. I wish there is a machine which will do simple things.
Q4
Do you have any consistent subject matter or theme through your works? If so, please explain us.
A4
I don’t have fixed styles or concept. I want to keep changing.
Q5
Please tell us the most difficult or considerable part when you create your work.
A5
I often create time-consuming stuff, so I have a lot of things to do and it takes time and that’s hard.
Q6
Have you ever felt that your work is a "media art"? Also, what is the difference between "media arts" and "traditional fine arts"?
A6
Pictures which I drew with a pen one by one on the desk turn into a moving film with a time-line using technology. I polish off these visual images using a machine with the help of many people including musicians, and the piece is converted into signals and spread around world, and I receive the feedback from the audience immediately……this is a dynamic media, isn’t it?
Q7
As an artist/creator, please tell us your approach, stance or point of view when you create your work.
A7
I would like to work without sticking to something. When I think of an idea, without thinking ahead, I start creating anyway.
Q8
What is your motto?
A8
Combine two Chinese characters which mean ‘sound’ and ‘happy’ respectively, which reads “Kenko”, the same pronunciation as a Japanese word which means “health”.
Q9
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
A9
While taking a walk.
Q10
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
A10
I want to create something.
Q11
Please name of the people, things, or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.

When I changed my picture into data and brought it on the screen, I was thrilled by watching the white color of the paint turned into the white color of light. I remember I felt that I would be able to draw something new.

Yuri NORSHTEIN
He became an inspiration for me to develop an interest in art animation.

UESUGI Noboru
I was influenced by him while I listened to him from my early teenage years. I feel I began to think many things as a result of seeing his way of life.
