Insiders' Briefings

Crime and policing

Scenes of pitched battles between police and protesters during last year’s student riots in central London have thrust the role of the police back into the media spotlight. In this briefing Press Gazette hears from leading journalists in the field to get their views on policing and crime levels across the country, what makes a good crime correspondent, and what they expect the big stories to be in 2011.

Homelessness

According to a recent report from Broadway, the London-based charity for the homeless, 3,600 people slept rough in the capital last year alone. But there are few journalists who cover the housing beat exclusively. We have spoken to some of the top correspondents and asked what the biggest housing issues of the day are and where to find the best stories. We have also put together a list of useful contacts and a diary of upcoming dates relevant to housing stories.

Environment

Climate change is widely acknowledged to be the biggest issue threatening life on this planet. We asked the top environment journalists what it is makes their beat so exciting, how to write the perfect environment story and what they see as the big stories coming up in their sector. We have also collated a useful list of web addresses, phone numbers and emails to add to the green section of your contacts book.

Transport

The Coalition Government's spending review on 20 October may have profound implications for Britain’s costly transport system. We questioned the country's top transport correspondents and asked them what they think are the biggest transport stories coming up. We've also put together a handy list of contacts useful for anyone who finds themselves covering stories on the transport beat.

Education and free schools

In this briefing we hear the sales pitch from education secretary (and former Times journalist) Michael Gove on the new Government's flagship free schools policy. And we find out from top education correspondents how big they expect the academies and free schools story to get and what else journalists need to know about education policy. We also include a handy guide to education sources for your contacts book.
