The Albert Haynesworth era appears to be over in Washington. The controversial defensive tackle has been shipped to the New England Patriots for a 2013 fifth-round draft pick, according to the Associated Press, which cites an unnamed source.

That sound you're hearing is a huge sigh of relief (or is it a hearty cheer?) from Redskins fans.

Haynesworth was a two-time All-Pro when he signed a seven-year, $100-million contract ($41 million guaranteed) with the Redskins in 2009.

But he played only 20 games in two seasons with just 6 1/2 sacks, provided many distractions for the team -- including legal troubles, conditioning issues and a feud with Coach Mike Shanahan -- and was suspended for the final four games of last season for conduct detrimental to the team.

If Patriots fans are concerned about the acquisition of someone with Haynesworth's history, Coach Bill Belichick sounded reassuring Thursday.

“You can never have too much pass rush,” said Belichick, who has helped such players as Randy Moss and Corey Dillon restart their careers in the past.
