Sen. Paul attempted to have a debate and a vote on his amendments to better the PATRIOT Act as promised by Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D -NV). However that never came to fruition and had to fight his own party as well resorting to filibuster tactics, but some rule playing allowed the Senate to bypass the process. He was able to get a vote on even if his amendments would be heard. Amendments pertaining to warrants, financial records and gun registries, 2 of which were voted on. Unfortunately they were tabled and the Patriot Act was passed.
It is sad to see that the Republicans and Democrats do not see their own hypocrisy in this. Republicans rightly complained about a large un-debated Universal Healthcare Bill passed with little time. Yet they support this ramming though of the re-authorization of the PATRIOT Act that was not debated the first time it became law. Many of the issues Sen. Paul is bringing up so did the Democrats; however, now they are more than pleased to pass this monstrosity.
This is still a victory for Sen. Paul and the Liberty Movement though, as Sen. Paul was able to push the debate out in the the public and get at least 23 votes against it.
