In 10 years, will bookstores still be around?

loading...

The announcement that Borders, the second-largest U.S. bookstore chain, is shuttering its remaining 399 stores begs the question of how long will bookstores will remain open as readers start using e-books more. Do you think that bookstores will be around another decade?

  • I have to admit that I've been purchasing books from amazon for the last 2 years and in addition exclusively on my Kindle for the last year. They may be smaller but bookstores will still be around. I still love the Barnes and Noble experience.

  • I would hope so. There is something wonderful about a book. While the Kindle and its clones have their purpose, the problem is with privacy, specifically privacy of what you read. Amazon keeps all sort of statistics on Kindle readers. To the best of my knowledge Amazon and others still have the ability to retrieve all e-books on the machine. The story of the Old Soviet Encyclopedia, where the annual update would require the destruction of "historic facts" in the prior version.

I can see the tracking of individuals by what they read. Tracking of book purchases, via electronic account and the GPS data that are in book reader raises privacy problems. In an America with 32 Czars all seeking to retain and expand their power. Tracing people who read a book on mushrooms, generation of spores, Nitrate Chemistry, firearms ancient and modern --- may lead to the boot on the door.

Buying books for cash at a book store is more difficult to trace.

  • Hello:

The books will never be stopped reading any topic. There are some cold weather out there that we have to be able to wait and would need patience until my turn will be healthy.

The question could have been asked about European Style "Coffee Shops" where people lingered. THe Answer for one: Starbucks.

Yes Bookstore will exist. Perhaps not Big Box bookstores--But bookstores none the less.

  • My 83 year old mother, my 55 year old wife and my kids all use kindles now. Finally, text books are going in that direction.
A lot of polution and destruction occurs in the production of a book - let them go.

Books, like all other forms of media, are coming to the realization of a virtual phase-out due to the advancement in technology. As we have watched the rapid progression from records, to 8 tracks, to tapes, to CD, and eventually our current digital music, we notice how each trend has had a smaller and smaller shelf life. Luckily for books, our traditions for recording and reading has been literally the same for centuries. We will always yearn for a "good, sturdy book," but the problem lies that physical bookstores allows their overhead costs to be passed down to the consumer, where online shops (Amazon, Half.com, etc.) can use the discount to drive free standing stores to close shop. I believe books in the non-digital form will always be around, I just hypothesize the Barnes and Nobles and Borders of the world need to turn into solely .coms to stay profitable and relevant.
