Phytosanitary Applications of Irradiation
Feb 28, 2011
An extensive review of the phytosanitary application of irradiation has just been published by the Institute of Food Technologists, Vol. 10, 2011 Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety. This review by Guy Hallman, describes the use of irradiation as a phyto sanitary measure to overcome quarantine barriers to trade in mostly food, but also non-food items.
Food irradiation is gaining worldwide acceptance. Currently a total of nearly 19,000 metric tons of sweet potatoes and fruit (mangos, guavas, longans, lychee, rambutan, dragon fruit, citrus and banana) plus a small amount of curry leaf is irradiated annually in 6 countries to control quarantine pests.
