In Kentucky, our forbears were in the founding wave of the westward expansion. The Cumberland Gap became a portal to yet another new world that would stretch to St. Louis, the gateway to the west, and eventually, the Pacific Ocean. Yet, Boone, Walker, and other Kentucky founders chose Kentucky as the place where they wanted to build a life for themselves and their families. Simply put, Kentucky was the place they called home.

Now, more than two hundred years later, ConnectKentucky stands squarely in this same tradition by building a better home for all who come here. ConnectKentucky is leading the way into a new economy for Kentuckians. By leveraging the latest in technology and networking, ConnectKentucky is ensuring Kentucky remains the place of choice to work, live, and raise a family. ConnectKentucky is a Kentucky tradition.

Across the Commonwealth, Kentuckians are using technology to foster progress and improve their lives. Artisans of Eastern Kentucky attract tourists to Appalachia through Internet-based driving trails. A working mother brings the classroom to her home, earning a degree through online courses. A rural hospital provides its patients with examinations from the best doctors in the state through a broadband Internet connection. Nearly 60,000 Kentucky citizens use the Internet to choose the new Kentucky brand, Unbridled Spirit. And Kentucky soldiers in Iraq are given a chance to talk to their families, real-time, face to face.

Information Technology is an enabler for expanding wealth, improving education, and increasing access to healthcare.

Kentuckians now live and work in the midst of an economic and cultural transformation that connects the world through advanced communications and information technology. Progressive policies and the innovative use of technology provide the Commonwealth with the opportunity to thrive in this new environment. Regardless of the label, whether it is the New Economy, the Knowledge Economy, the Next Economy or the Now Economy, the premise is the same: in light of recent economic and cultural shifts, individuals, communities, and states can choose to embrace the inherent opportunities or they can sit idly while the world passes by.
