The Courier-Mail Spelling Bee

The Courier-Mail’s 2011 Spelling Bee is an opportunity for your school to be part of a high-profile state-wide contest, but you must be registered with us in order to participate. Information kits, logins and access passwords will be mailed to all School principals in Term 2, so please check with your principal, or contact us directly if you need further information.

The Courier-Mail’s Spelling Bee is free and open to all students from Years 1-12 in all schools throughout Queensland.  There will be prizes and incentives along the way, culminating in a Grand Final play-off to be held at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast in October. The preliminary rounds of The Courier-Mail Spelling Bee will be conducted online, to ensure all schools, regardless of their location, can participate.

The categories are:

  • Grades 1 – 3
  • Grades 4 – 7
  • Grades 8 -12

Semi finals
The semi–finals will be conducted online throughout August.

Each school will be asked to nominate 5 of their best spellers in each of the 3 age categories. If your school does not have 3 Grade levels to compete in the semi finals you cannot add another category in the same grade level eg 2 x Grades 1-3

Each school is allowed a maximum of 15 students per school.

Once you have selected your finalists your school will be sent a login and details of when the semi finals will be available online.

Each semi-finalist will be given 3 rounds of 10 words.

Students will only be able to sit for the semi finals during school hours of 8.00am – 3.30pm (Monday to Friday) and only under exam supervision.

The Grand Final
The top five finalists in each grade category throughout Queensland will then be invited to the play-off at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast on October 05 2011, for the title of The Courier-Mail 2011 Spelling Bee Champion in each grade category.
