FUW to back cancer charity

CANCER Research Wales has been chosen as the Farmers’ Union of Wales’ new charitable cause by its president Emyr Jones.

“I am assured by Cancer Research Wales that all money raised will be staying in Wales to fund pioneering research projects undertaken by internationally renowned scientists and PhD students,” said Mr Jones.

The charity is currently funding a project looking at ways to stop breast and prostate tumours spreading to other parts of the body.

RWAS got 700 foreign visitors

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society welcomed nearly 700 visitors from 40 countries during the four-day show in July, figures just published show.

Ireland led the overseas visitors this year with 130, followed by Holland with 110, and New Zealand 108. Australia (69), the USA (34) and Belgium (34), were also strongly represented at the show, said the society’s Chief Steward at the International Pavilion, Ernie Beaumont.

A group of farmers from Texas were interested in importing British Blue cattle for ranches located east of Houston while a cattle breeder from Uganda was networking breeders in the UK particularly of Simmental, Charolais and Limousins with a view to potential future exports.

One visitor, a 90-year-old woman from Patagonia, was searching for family members related to her father who emigrated from North Wales to Argentina in 1910. She was accompanied by her nieces who spoke Spanish and Welsh but very little English.

Beet with very sweet taste

TRIDENT has hidden a number of Golden Tickets inside this year’s production of bagged British sugar beet feed as part of a treasure hunt that will win one lucky customer £500 cash. The other tickets will each net the finder £50 cash.

The large Golden Tickets will be hidden in randomly selected 25kg bags of Trident supabeet, the company’s molassed sugar beet feed.ŠTrident is also offering visitors to any of its show stands between now and December the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a 29 tonne bulk load of supaflow sugar beet feed (or the equivalent value as bagged supabeet).

Vintage AGM

THE Flintshire Vintage and Classic Tractor Society is holding its AGM on Wednesday, October 19 atŠ7.30pm when the speaker will be Idris Evans.
