Hall of a victory: New Heights 17s win Joe Brown Memorial Classic

The New Heights 16U team has gotten all the press this summer with its collection of high-major talent and four signature tournament championship wins. The 17s squad, which is pretty good in its own right, hasn’t gotten the same attention. And that’s OK with Jimmy Hall.

“It’s an organization,” the Brooklyn native said. “It’s not just about us. If they deserve it, we all deserve it. I give them their props.”

The New Heights 17s were the ones with the hardware Friday night, though.

Hall of St. Anthony and Mount Vernon’s Jarrel Marshall each had 14 points to lead New Heights to a tight, 70-67 win over the New York Panthers in the NJ Playaz Joe Brown Memorial Classic at the Wayne (N.J.) Police Athletic League. The 17s had help from three 16U players – Nassir Williams, Jalen Jenkins and Shamiek Sheppard – earlier in the day, but didn’t need them to win the title.

“We were straight,” Hall said.

Hall, a 6-foot-8 load down low, kept them on that path. His length – a 7-foot wingspan – keeps balls alive on the offensive glass and his skills in the post allowed New Heights to score in a number of different ways.

“He’s probably one of the most offensively skilled big men in the country,” said coach James Barrett, who was heading the New Heights 16s in Rahme Anderson’s absence. “His footwork is great and he plays hard.”

Hall, who holds offers from Penn State, Temple, Hofstra, Siena and Stony Brook, among others, leaves his home in East Flatbush, Brooklyn every morning at 7 a.m. during the school year to commute to St. Anthony in Jersey City. He doesn’t mind the early wakeup calls or the trip, citing the presence of legendary coach Bob Hurley.

“I’m learning from the best,” Hall said. “It keeps me out of the city. It keeps me away from all the craziness.”

Had Hall stayed in Brooklyn, he might have attended Bishop Loughlin. That’s where his New Heights teammate, Joel Angus, plays and the 6-foot-5 forward has had a tendency to step up in big games both during the high school season and this summer. Angus had 13 points against the Panthers on Friday.

“He plays up to the competition,” Barrett said.

The Panthers didn’t lay down, despite trailing almost the entire game. Former Robeson star Darrel Lucky knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the game at 50 with 8:47 left and ex-Boys & Girls standout Mike Taylor drained another 3 to bring the Panthers within 67-64 with just 53 seconds remaining. Wings grad Deonte Houston missed a running trey at the buzzer that would have tied the game.

“We knew they would go on a run,” Barrett said.

Hall said he believed his team would win throughout. Everyone contributed, from Mount Vernon’s Isaiah Cousins to Loughlin’s Tyliek Kimbrough to Montclair (Calif.) Prep’s Trey Dickerson, who used to play at Christ the King. This is the New Heights 17s’ fourth crown of the travel season.

“We go in every tournament expecting to win,” Barrett said.
