  • Mets' duo back, but Beltran better pack

There is no pretense around the Mets now about playing out the season with Carlos Beltran. The adults in the organization know there is no baseball miracle coming with the Mets just 11⁄2 games out of last place....

  • Collins wants no self-pity from his unusual suspects

Carlos Beltran was suffering from the flu yesterday, struggling so much, in fact, that he never even came to Citi Field. So as he arrived to the third spot on his lineup card yesterday, a place usually occupied by...

Mets will get what they ‘pay’ for in Beltran deal

There was surprise in the major league landscape. Not that the Mets had traded Francisco Rodriguez, but that they did so while ostensibly in a pennant race and yet the uproar was, at best, tame from the New York fans...

  • Mets hope for saving grace

The identity of the Mets' closer matters and it doesn't. There will be a comfort level in the clubhouse and, especially, in the bullpen if the Mets can uncover a late-game pecking order after trading Francisco...

Time for Reyes, Wright to show Mets why team should keep them together

Jose Reyes and David Wright will not be on the field tonight against the Phillies, and yet so much of the second half of the Mets’ season is about them. Because the Mets cannot make a long-shot run to the playoffs...

  • Mets had to trade K-Rod away

In his most important player transaction so far as Mets general manager, Sandy Alderson married common sense to dollars and cents and traded Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers. Though the Mets are still, at the least,...

Perfect fit for Jeter that brilliant effort came in Yankees win

This was chilling and memorable, nostalgic and surreal, impressive and historic. But because this was Derek Jeter, the most important element of a special day was this: It was meaningful. For at the end of his career...

No shortage of possible suitors ready to swipe Reyes from Mets

You want to get a pretty good baseball argument going? Then ask a front office executive what he thinks Jose Reyes will receive as a free agent. I have been doing exactly that for months, and as recently as this week...

Yankees look to keep something in preserves

In 1996, the initial Yankee marvel was not the rookie shortstop. Dwight Gooden had not pitched at all in 1995, had not pitched well in the majors since 1993 and was horrendous to open that '96 campaign, losing each...

  • Jeter's milestone takes more than intangibles

This was recently sitting with Alex Rodriguez. The subject was Derek Jeter and an approaching milestone and A-Rod was looking for just the right words to express the magnitude. Finally he said this: “You can’t fake 3...

This time Yankees controversy following Jeter, not A-Rod

CLEVELAND -- In this bizarro portion of the Yankees schedule, Derek Jeter is the controversial one and Alex Rodriguez is -- wait for it -- the singles hitter with "intangibles." Jeter is going for a milestone amid...

  • Doubts sap joy from Jeter's quest

CLEVELAND — This was not how it was supposed to be. It was not long ago that Derek Jeter and 4,000 hits were spoken in the same sentence without sarcasm; a recent time when there were legitimate projections on Jeter...

  • Aging Jeter must reaffirm his value to Yankees

CLEVELAND -- It was right here, right on this field, the last time Derek Jeter encountered this level of doubt. The stadium was called Jacobs Field then and Jeter had a stylish haircut, at least stylish for 1996,...

Mets GM considers making Reyes substantial offer: source

Sandy Alderson was pigeonholed early in his administration as a risk-averse executive who would strongly reject the idea of a mega-contract for any player, but specifically an injury-prone one such as Jose Reyes, who...

Yankees' Nunez to get undeserved seat

Eduardo Nunez can hit 1.000 -- and, believe me, against the Mets he is trying -- and he is heading back to the bench this week. He can win admirers (and has), but not a full-time job. Derek Jeter is...

Switch-hitters jump-starting offenses for Yankees, Mets

It is a New York, New York, weekend and that feels right. It works either way. Because more than any other matchup Yankees vs. Mets — or Mets vs. Yankees — is a switch-hitter’s paradise. They arrived to the ongoing...

Circumstances, not Girardi, will Yankees dictate starters

It is easy to forget now with time, but Joe Torre came to the Yankees viewed as an all-time loser. He had combined to play and manage 4,106 games, the second most without appearing in a World Series. Thus, traits...

  • Jeter's NYC spotlight is Reyes' to steal

  • Gonzalez, Verlander, Kemp and Halladay diamond’s top gems in ’11

  • Mets should be accustomed to bad news

This Mets season exists on two levels. They are trying to win this year, to honor the $140 million-plus payroll and the Wilpons’ insatiable hunger to fill Citi Field, and to appease a disillusioned fan base. But even...

    3UP: K-Rod, Alderson, Jeter

Jeter's injury could be blessing in disguise for Yankees

  • Jeter not ‘all right’ this time

Derek Jeter’s honor code goes like this: “I’m all right.” It has been his scripted line for all inquiries into injuries. Derek, noticed you limping. “I’m all right.” Did you grimace on that swing? “I’m all right.” Were...

Signing Reyes a risk, but losing him would be disaster for Mets
