ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Yankees have called up reliever Steve Garrison from Double-A Trenton to add another left-hander to the bullpen.
Sergio Mitre was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis. The right-hander is also suffering from a bacterial infection.
Garrison, 24, was 3-6 with a 6.26 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) for Trenton this season, his seventh in pro ball. The New Jersey native has not pitched in the major leagues.
“I have not stopped sweating since I woke up this morning,’’ said Garrison, who was claimed on waivers from San Diego last September.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Yankees reserve infielder Ramiro Pena underwent an emergency appendectomy surgery this morning at a Tampa hospital.
It was the second appendectomy in two weeks for a Yankees player. Joba Chamberlain, who is out for the year due to Tommy John surgery, had his appendix removed two weeks ago in New York, according to a source.
Pena woke up this morning at 6 a.m., called Yankees trainers complaining about stomach pains and was taken to the hospital.
“This morning I got a call that he was having bad stomach pains,” Joe Girardi said before
Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay, according to The Associated Press. “Unfortunately on his (26th) birthday. It will be a birthday I’m sure he’ll never forget.”
Girardi said he has no timetable for when Pena will return, but doesn’t expect him to miss an extended period.
Third baseman Brandon Laird was summoned from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) to take Pena’s place on the roster. Laird was expected to be on hand at Tropicana Field; when he gets into a game, he will be making his major-league debut.
In 90 games with SWB, Laird hit .266 with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs. Laird could share time at third base with Eduardo Nunez while Alex Rodriguez recovers from surgery to repair a torn knee meniscus.
Pena’s illness came after he played very well at third base in Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto. He handled Corey Patterson’s leadoff bunt attempt well in the fifth, throwing on the run, then speared Rajai Davis’ hard liner for the second out. Pena also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Girardi said reliever Rafael Soriano (right elbow inflammation) and infielder Eric Chavez (broken left foot) are scheduled to start minor league rehab assignments Tuesday night with Single-A Tampa.
“Those are both good news,” Girardi said.

TORONTO -- The Yankees were one of 17 teams in Denver on Thursday night to watch Ubaldo Jimenez pitch.
According to several talent evaluators, they have a better than average chance to acquire the 27-year-old because they have the top-shelf prospects the Rockies are looking for.
In mid-June the Rockies started getting calls on Jimenez and were told they weren’t actively shopping him, but if teams were willing to talk about moving their best prospects the Rockies would listen.
At 44-48 and 8 ½ games behind the NL West-leading Giants, the Rockies are very close to being sellers in a sellers' market as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.
According to a person familiar with the Rockies’ mindset, they believe Jimenez has pouted this year because Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez received contract extensions and he didn’t.
“They are annoyed at him,’’ the source said of Jimenez, who is 5-8 with a 4.08 ERA but pitching better lately after starting the season 0-5.
The Rockies recently scouted the Yankees’ Triple-A and Double-A teams and like Jesus Montero but not with the idea of using him at catcher. Instead, they view him as a first baseman. They also are high on pitchers Manuel Banuelos and Dellin Betances.
However, the party line other organizations have heard coming from The Bronx is that those three are untouchable.
BUSHES: WHATEVER IT TAKES
Yet it’s clear the Yankees need to upgrade their rotation. Bartolo Colon’s past two outings weren’t good and he might be still suffering from a left hamstring injury that forced the 38-year-old onto the disabled list in mid-June.
He didn’t get out of the first inning Thursdaynight when he was sabotaged by shaky defense.
Phil Hughes, who starts tomorrow, struggled in his prior outing which was his first since returning from the DL.
Hence the Yankees sending six scouts to big league parks Thursday night.
Jimenez is in demand because of his ability (55-44 with a 3.60 ERA), affordable contract and age.
He is making $2.8 million this year and $4.2 million next season. There is a club option for $5.75 million with a $1 million buyout for 2013 and a club option for $8 million and a $1 million buyout for 2014. The second option is only good if the 2013 option is exercised and may be voided if Jimenez is traded.
Not to belittle millions of dollars, but that’s ashtray money for the Yankees.
What Yankees scout Jay Darnell and the 16 other scouts, including Dick Egan from the Tigers, saw Thursday was another solid outing.
In Jimenez’s past six starts he is 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA. That’s quite an improvement from the beginning of the season when he went 0-5 with a 5.86 ERA and didn’t post his first victory until June 1.

TORONTO — Looking for a second lefty reliever to go with Boone Logan, the Yankees signed veteran J.C. Romero Thursday and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Romero, 35, was released earlier this season by the Phillies after working 24 games. He signed a minor league deal with the Nationals that had an out by July 15. Washington took the decision out of Romero’s hands by releasing him from Syracuse.
The Yankees’ plan in spring training was for Pedro Feliciano, who signed a two-year deal worth $8 million, to be the left-handed specialist. However, a rotator cuff strain surfaced during the exhibition season and he hasn’t thrown an inning. Feliciano’s rehab program was shut down last week and re-started Wednesday with light throwing but it’s not likely that he will pitch this year.
Romero was effective against lefty hitters with the Phillies this season. They hit .208 (5-for-24) against him but in 16 1/3 innings overall he allowed 16 hits and 12 walks. Four of those walks were issued to lefty swingers. Eight of his 10 strikeouts were against lefties.
Romero has an undisclosed out in the deal he signed with the Yankees.
Across the past three years, Romero has held left-handed hitters to a .174 (36-for-207) average. Romero was suspended for 50 games prior to the 2009 season for the use of performance enhancing drugs.

Speedy outfielder Greg Golson will take Alex Rodriguez’s spot on the Yankees roster.
Golson will be activated in time for Thursday night’s second-half opener against the Blue Jays. Rodriguez underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his knee and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
In 61 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre this season, Golson hit .295 with five home runs and 25 RBIs. Golson played in 31 games for the Yankees last year, often as a defensive replacement late in games, and went 6-for-30 at the plate.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankees right-hander Mark Prior is back pitching after missing almost three months because of a strained groin.
The converted reliever said it was a step in the right direction Wednesday after allowing an unearned run and one hit over two innings for the Gulf Coast League Yankees against Atlanta minor leaguers.
In his first outing since pitching on April 18 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Prior threw 24 pitches with a fastball that reached 90 mph.
Prior has struggled with shoulder injuries and made his previous major league appearance in August 2006. The 30-year old went 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA in 30 starts for the NL Central champion Chicago Cubs in 2003.
Also, Yankees reliever Rafael Soriano threw 25 pitches during his second batting practice session since going on the disabled list May 17 because of right elbow inflammation.
Soriano signed a three-year, $35 million deal with the Yankees in the offseason to handle the eighth inning, but struggled while adapting to the new role. He was 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 16 appearances before the injury.
Left-hander Pedro Feliciano, hoping to avoid surgery for a left shoulder tear, has resumed a light throwing program. Reliever Damaso Marte, coming back from left shoulder surgery, is continuing to throw off a bullpen mound.
Also, the Yankees have finalized a contract with 24-year old Cuban right-hander Reinier Casanova and assigned him to the GCL Yankees.
