COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Radek Martinek to a one-year contract, adding the veteran blue-liner that they needed.
General manager Scott Howson announced the move on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old Martinek, a 10-year NHL veteran, had 21 goals and 82 assists with 272 penalty minutes in 453 games with the Islanders. Last season, he had three goals and 13 assists with 35 penalty minutes and a 20:50 average ice time in 64 games. He missed most of the 2009-10 campaign due to a knee injury.

Jaromir Jagr has signed a one-year deal with the Flyers and will return to the NHL after a three-season absence.
The team announced the deal
on its Twitter page. It is worth $3.3 million.

The Penguins announced they had withdrawn their one-year, $2 million offer moments before the free-agency signing period began at noon.
“We made what we thought was a very fair contract offer to Jaromir on Tuesday, based on his stated interest of returning to the Penguins,” general manager Ray Shero said. “We made our best offer from the start, given our salary-cap structure, in an attempt to facilitate a deal. But now, after several days, with an extended time frame for making a decision, and additional teams getting involved, we have decided to move in a different direction.”
Jagr, 39, was a Pittsburgh draft pick in 1990, and helped lead the Penguins to two Stanley Cup championships. The franchise’s hope was that he accept the offer, play at least one season in Pittsburgh, and then retire with the team he started with.
“Jaromir is one of the greatest players in Penguins history,” Shero said, “and we wish him all the best.”

Despite an NHL head-coaching debut that lasted 33 games, John MacLean said he expects to get back behind a bench again,
NJ.com reports.
In his first interview since he was fired by the Devils two days before Christmas, MacLean admits to few regrets over his 9-22-2 record.
“Do you wish you did some things differently? Maybe, but you have to live with the decisions you make,” MacLean told The Star-Ledger. “Did I make mistakes? Sure I did. I understand some of what happened. You learn from it. I make no apologies to anybody for anything.
“I did whatever I thought was right and I think I’ll be back on the horse again. I’m anticipating getting back into coaching again, whether it’s a head, assistant or head coach in the minors. It’s something I enjoyed doing.”
The Devils' record improved under Jacques Lemaire but failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 1997.
MacLean's tenure as coach was marked by making Ilya Kovalchuk a healthy scratch eight games into the season.
MacLean, asked if he knows what went wrong during his short stay, said, “I do know. Some you can explain. Some you can’t explain. Some you would believe. Some you wouldn’t believe.
"I have some thoughts on it, but I can’t change what happened so I won’t (complain).”
The Devils have not named a replacement for Lemaire, who retired after the final regular-season game.
GM Lou Lamoriello said he has "the utmost respect" for MacLean, who "was put into a difficult situation.
"It was very tough but he’s still a helluva coach as far as I’m concerned," Lamoriello said. "I support him 100 percent.”

Jaromir Jagr is likely returning to the NHL where it began for him.
The Pittsburgh Tribune Reviewis reporting that Jagr will sign a one-year, $2 million contract with the Penguins.
The report cites "longtime acquaintances of team co-owner Mario Lemieux and NHL agents," and says Jagr is flying to Pittsburgh from the Czech Republic. Fans awaiting his arrival Wednesday night at Pittsburgh's airport did not see him.
NHL.com reportsno deal had been reached as of Thursday afternoon.
Jagr broke into the NHL with the Penguins 1990 and won two Stanley Cups. He played for the Capitals before joining the Rangers for three seasons, ending in 2008. He has played the past three seasons in Russia's KHL.
"He was an icon in Pittsburgh," Penguins GM Ray Shero said Tuesday, according to the newspaper. "We would like to see him finish his career here."
Neither Jagr nor his agent, former NHL player Petr Svoboda, had confirmed the deal.
The Red Wings and Canadiens are believed to have also made offers for Jagr, 39, who starred for the Czech team at this spring's world championships.

If the Islanders want to land free agents they realize they have to be creative.
Which is why GM Garth Snow traded a 2012 fourth-round pick to the Canucks on Tuesday for the negotiating rights to defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. The Islanders now have till Friday at noon to exclusively negotiate with Ehrhoff before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Islanders forward Michael Grabner, who played with Ehrhoff in Vancouver, has done his part to convince Ehrhoff to sign.
"I already talked to ehrhoff,"
Grabner wrote on Twiiter. "told him its great on long island, tried my best...rest is up to him people."
Ehrhoff rejected a five-year, $23-million offer from Vancouver,
and The Province reports that he would prefer to land with Detroit. The Islanders do have the cap room to surpass that offer and go over $6 million per year in attempt to entice the 28-year-old to come to Long Island.
Ehrhoff, a native of Germany, had 14 goals, 36 assists and plus-19 rating last season for the Western Conference champions.

MONTREAL -- Zdeno Chara hoisted the Stanley Cup as captain of the Boston Bruins two weeks ago. Next, the big defenseman will be meeting with the Montreal police.
Police say they intend to question Chara in the coming weeks and decide whether to press charges for the hit that sidelined Montreal forward Max Pacioretty with a concussion and a cracked vertebra.
Quebec’s director of criminal prosecutions ordered an investigation into the hit by Chara during a regular-season game against the Canadiens on March 8.
Police spokesman Ian Lafreniere said Chara is the last person they need to speak with to complete their investigation. He added that the Bruins have been cooperative, and hired a Montreal lawyer to act as an intermediary.
Pacioretty recently signed a new two-year contract with the Canadiens and is expected to be ready for next season. He reacted to the news about the investigation on Twitter.
“Last comment on this: I hope Chara is NOT prosecuted. I have moved on from my incident and I hope everyone else can do the same,” he wrote. “All I am focused on is getting ready for next season, and will no longer comment on the past.”

The Devils' alumni association added two more members to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday when former New Jersey centers Doug Gilmour and Joe Nieuwendyk were announced among the 2011 inductees.
In addition, longtime Flyers defenseman Mark Howe was finally chosen for the Hall of Fame, and will be inducted in Toronto Nov. 19, along with goalie Ed Belfour.
Former Devils coach Pat Burns, who died in November, was not selected.
Nieuwendyk won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003, the third team with which he won the Cup, following the Stars in 1999 and Flames in 1989. Currently the Dallas GM, Nieuwendyk came to the Devils in 2002 with Jamie Langenbrunner in a trade for Jason Arnott, Randy McKay and a first-round pick. He went 17-28-45 in 80 games in 2002-03 and 3-6-9 in 17 playoff games.
“I am humbled and honored to be voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame,” Nieuwendyk said. “This is a tremendous honor.”
Gilmour played one-plus seasons with the Devils, giving the team a major boost down the stretch of the 1996-97 season, the rebound from their 1995-96 playoff miss, after he arrived from Toronto with Dave Ellett and a draft pick for Jason Smith, Steve Sullivan and the rights to Alyn McCauley on Feb. 25, 1997. He went 13-40-53 in 63 games in 1997-98, his lone full year with the Devils.
Gilmour won the Stanley Cup with Nieuwendyk for Calgary in 1989, and he captained the Maple Leafs.
