MICROS Systems Inc., a provider of information technology solutions for the hospitality and retail industries, has announced an alliance with Trustwave for its PCI compliance solutions. MICROS now offers its clients the managed Unified Threat Management (UTM) service and TrustKeeper 3.0, which will help MICROS clients achieve and maintain compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) in conjunction with all of MICROS's PA-DSS validated products.

The PCI DSS is the payment card industry security requirement for entities that store, process or transmit cardholder data and has been endorsed by all the major card brands. Not only does MICROS offer a complete portfolio of 19 different PA-DSS validated products, but for more than two years, MICROS has offered its clients tokenization, which assigns a unique identifier, or token, to cardholder data replacing any personal information which would be stored on the point of sale and at risk for data theft.

The managed UTM service enhances the security offered by tokenization. Trustwave's UTM core technology includes a firewall, gateway anti-virus, Virtual Private Network (VPN) support, and an in-line Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), which supplements the firewall to stop attacks at the application layer before it can penetrate network operations.

The UTM also helps satisfy requirements 1, 4, 5 and 11 of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard version 1.2.

"By adding security controls to its existing tokenization solution, MICROS is truly defining defense-in-depth by providing merchants a layered security approach to PCI DSS compliance," Robert J. McCullen, chairman and CEO of Trustwave, said in a news release. "Trustwave's modular approach to technology integration will allow MICROS to add additional security controls and features to the existing managed appliance should the need arise in the future."
