ALBANY – While New Yorkers continue to strongly approve of the job Gov. Cuomo is doing, they’re sending him a big “not so fast’’ message when it comes to growing speculation that he’ll run for President in 2016, a new poll this morning shows.

The Siena College survey found that, by a lopsided 83-14 percent, New York voters say it’s way too premature for the governor to consider running for higher office and that he should concentrate his energies on solving the state’s considerable problems.

Voters also were against, but by a far smaller margin, the possibility that Cuomo could become President Obama’s running mate for vice president next year, a scenario recently raised by a prominent New York Republican and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, a Democrat.

Thirty-nine percent of voters said they’d support Obama picking Cuomo to replace Vice President Joe Biden, but 51 percent were opposed. Ten percent were unsure.

“Presidential speculation is nothing new for New York governor, however, voters think it is way too early to start printing Cuomo 2016 bumper stickers,’’ said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg.

“And if the Presidents wants a new VP running mate next year, a majority of New Yorkers say they hope he doesn’t choose Cuomo for the job,’’ he continued.

The new poll, meanwhile, found Cuomo with a strong 71-21 percent favorable rating in the wake of last month’s ending of a legislative session that saw same sex marriages legalized and a property tax cap passed.

That was up slightly from Cuomo’s 68-21 percent favorable rating before the session ended last month.

Cuomo’s job performance rating has also risen slightly, to 58-40 percent from 55-41 percent.

Polling from across the nation in recent months has shown that Cuomo is the country’s most popular large state governor.
