Spamalot stops laughing at Britney

I've been lucky enough to be able to avoid writing about Britney Spears of
late. Thankfully, Spears has made it easy for me by not being in Vegas recently.
Considering her history of drama and histrionics in Vegas, that is probably one
of her saner choices these days.
But at Wynn Las Vegas each night, the show Spamalot has a joke about the
deeply troubled pop star. The actress who plays the Lady of the Lake character,
a sort of parody of an Andrew Lloyd Webber diva, worries about being replaced by
Britney Spears. In the Vegas production of Spamalot, the line would be delivered
with the Lady of the Lake actress miming cutting off all of her hair, an obvious
reference to Spears. But all that changed last week.
Apparently, the horrid tale of Spears' life has become too much for the whimsical
humor of Monty Python. The BBC is reporting that director Mike Nichols, along
with creator Eric Idle, made the change in Spamalot last week. "We think it is
now too sad," Idle told the BBC.
Also sad is that the replacement joke is sort of lame, removing Spears
name in favor of Posh Spice. Does anyone really worry about losing a job to Posh
Spice? Does Paris Hilton's name have too many syllables?
