The Best Value in Las Vegas

November 14, 2005 |  8:46 am
I took my own advice and read through The Las Vegas Advisor. As I've noted before, the $5 newsletter is the single best consumer guide to Las Vegas for people who gamble. I don't gamble and so I don't read it as regularly as I should. A typical sentence in the November issue:
"Luxor lures Jet-Set with lots of 9/9 Jacks or Better (99.5%) in its high limit area, including two Ten Plays, four Triple/Five Plays, and single-line machines in $1, $5, $10 and $25 denominations."
This information might make Bill Bennett get down on his knees and squeal like a pig with joy, but to me it isn't English.
But the Las Vegas Advisor also has plenty of information that has nothing to do with gambling like the top ten bargains in Las Vegas. According to the same November issue, since 2000 the top bargain in Las Vegas has remained the complete steak dinner at Ellis Island casino for $4.95 which includes a soup or salad, a 10 ounce sirloin, green beans and choice of potato.  It is available 24/7 and so I went and tried it late Saturday night. It was as advertised and I am reminded of what a great place Las Vegas is for the Atkins diet (if you skip the potato, and I didn't).

New York has the Stars, we Share the Chefs

Mix_ijblirkn The Michelin rating of New York restaurants gave its famous 3 star ranking to three restaurants with Vegas connections. Alain Ducasse scored 3 stars for Essex House there and in Las Vegas he is responsible for Mix at Mandalay Bay. At the Venetian, Bouchon's Thomas Keller hit  3 stars for Per Se. Finally, Prime Steakhouse's  Jean-Georges Vongerichten won for his namesake, Jean-Georges,  restaurant in New York.
