Sharks at Golden Nugget

November 14, 2006 | 11:36 am

Thetankatthegoldennugg When my mom first came to Las Vegas to visit, she was very excited to win (or be given, I forget the exact setup) a free tour bus ride and day tour of Laughlin, Nev. This is a town about 90 miles from Vegas on the Colorado River. Ignoring my warnings, my mom imagined beautiful natural vistas, old ghost towns and interesting western local lore. Instead, she got a bus ride to a casino in Laughlin where she was guided to slot machines at a familiar but inferior version of a Vegas resort. Oh, and, she got a free bag lunch. On another visit, my mom was given by the Stratosphere, where she was staying, free tickets to watch — wait for it — to watch: the sun set. I kid you not.

Las Vegas is great at letting you win or giving you free ways to spend time doing what resorts want you to do. Anyway, last night it was my turn. I went to venerable downtown property Golden Nugget's media night to see the hotel show off some upgrades. I admit, I am impatient and would rather have a fact sheet than a lecture. I like to explore on my own. And, I literally turn bored to tears in the face of a litany of detail (like the size of the television screens in the reserved pool side cabanas). I was there for one reason — photographer Sarah Gerke had learned that one of the upgrades was a swimming pool with a see through water slide and that the water slide glided swimmers through a huge shark tank. Cool!

Radio Station Fights Feeding Ban

July 26, 2006 | 11:45 am
A classic rock radio station sent two employees to a city park with sodas, iced tea and doughnuts. The station is the latest to rebel against city's the new rule that bans feeding homeless people in public parks. Police ordered the radio station employees out of the park. Do city officials even begin to see how nasty Las Vegas looks to the nation?  Abbie Hoffman where are you?

Punk Rock interrupts quiet at Neonoplis

March 15, 2006 | 12:29 pm
Last night I went to see the British punk metal band GBH at Jillians, an arcade that does all ages shows at Neonopolis. What is "Neonopolis" you may ask? According to its website Neonoplis is  "the culmination of a 10-year downtown renewal initiative. Set in motion by some of the city's leading entrepreneurs including owners of downtown hotels and casinos, the $70 million Fremont Street Experience was only the beginning of a $200 million makeover that has revitalized the city center."  To the less charitable it is a mostly empty shopping mall that opened in 2002. Yes, with its opening the city's leading entrepreneurs, who are sort of identical to the casino owners downtown, were hoping to pull in the tourists from the Strip and capture the patronage of local yuppies. I am sure someone is still paying plenty of lip service to that goal.  But they seem to have given up on this expensive toy. The fact that they are hosting all ages shows for 80s punk at all speaks volumes as does the fact that under "Events" the website proclaims that "2004 Events Coming Soon."
