Warren Zevon's wild Vegas days

May 29, 2007 |  7:06 am
I have been mesmerized by "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon" by Crystal Zevon. The book is a warts and all authorized biography of her ex-husband the late, great songwriter Warren Zevon. Before he died in 2003, near the end of his life, Zevon was a regular performer at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay. But Zevon also had wilder years during which he visited Vegas. So, I spoke yesterday to Crystal Zevon who remembers first coming with Zevon to Vegas in the early 70's when he was the bandleader for the Everly Brothers as well as her marriage here to the Excitable Boy a few years later.

"I remember when he was playing with the Everly Brothers at the Landmark. He called me at home in the middle of the night and said you have to come to Vegas. At the time I had two foster children, and so, in the middle of the night, I found a babysitter and drove across the desert. When I got there it was 10 am. There was a note at the desk to meet him at the pool. He was down at the pool with a strong Bloody Mary in hand. He decided to prove how much he loved me because I came. So, he climbed to the top of the high dive. He was terrified but he jumped to show me he was willing to fall from great heights for me. That was a typical Warren thing where he would have to prove whatever. This was the time he wrote 'Mamma couldn't be Persuaded.'

"We got married in Las Vegas, too (May 25, 1974). We got married when things career wise were very up and down. Warren came in one day to our kitchen in Hollywood and he literally got down on one knee and proposed to me. We were afraid we might change our minds if we slept on it. So, we took acid and drove across the desert with a couple of our friends. We checked into the Stardust because his dad used to stay there. We got married at The Chapel of the Bells. We had to go find something borrowed and something blue and all of that. We felt wonderful. We were on acid. Then all of the sudden he got very serious and said that this wasn't good enough for my wedding. There wasn't even a ring. But I thought everything was perfect even not having any sleep. Until then it had been very romantic. But there wasn't a ring. So, Warren went into the bathroom. I don't know exactly what he did. But he was wet when he came back. He had a washer in his hand that he put on my finger. We thought the marriage would last forever."

Un-Facts on John Corbett

March 15, 2007 |  9:27 am
Doing background research before an interview occasionally means winding up with a lot of bad information. Mostly, you separate good from bad before you get the subject on the phone; as a policy, I tend to avoid stuff that just floats out there on the Internet unless it is anchored to a source I've learned to trust. Otherwise, you wind up in situations like what Sun writer Jerry Fink goes through interviewing John Corbett when asking about "facts" he found on the Internet:

"Q: You're a vegetarian?
A: I don't know where that came from. No, I'm not a vegetarian.

Q: You're good friends with Daryl Hannah?
A: Well, we're friends. I wouldn't say good friends. Where did they get that?

Q: You live with your girlfriend Bo Derek in Seattle?
A: That's not true. That's not true. I don't know where they get this stuff."

Jenna Booted From Marine Ball

October 31, 2006 | 10:58 am

Jennajamesontitoortiz_j42uv1nc Every week Jenna Jameson is the sponsor of "Silicone Sundays" at Forty Deuce at Mandalay Bay. Jenna Jameson is more than a star in Las Vegas: she is a native. And, since nowhere else do adult entertainment and the mainstream mingle quite the way they do in Las Vegas, Jenna Jameson has been savvy cashing in on that too.

When Jenna Jameson started dating Tito Ortiz they quickly became the hottest couple in Las Vegas. The ultimate fighter and the adult film star are welcome and regular guests at resort nightclubs and our local press has reported breathlessly on their frolicking together. Just when Vegas lost Carmen and Dave it seemed Jenna and Tito arrived to be Las Vegas' very public party couple.

Apparently, though, the bloom of love between the two is not appreciated everywhere. For example, at Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, Calif. According to Marine Corps Times, Ortiz was to host a sold-out ball there when the Marines discovered to their horror that he intended to bring his girlfriend to the dance. Operation Stop Jenna came quickly. Major Jason Johnston, a spokesman at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar told Marine Corps Times:

"We invited him, and he accepted. Then, it became aware to us that his guest was going to be his girlfriend. Then, we had to make a decision, and the decision made was that she was not an individual or guest that we really felt was appropriate for the Marine Corps ball."

But chivalry isn't dead. Ortiz has refused to go without his porn star love. Oh well, they will always have Vegas.

Duane 'Dog' Chapman Proud of How He Got His Luster

September 15, 2006 |  9:24 am

Duane Dog Chapman Back in February, I met and interviewed Duane "Dog" Chapman when he was in Las Vegas to attend the Professional Bail Agents of the United States convention at the Luxor. Maybe, that "United States" part of this organization's name should have meant more to him. Chapman proudly told the audience and me in an interview beforehand about his 2003 successful capture in Mexico of Andrew Luster, a fugitive cosmetics heir convicted of rape in this country.

Chapman described this hunt as the challenge that brought out the best and the brightest bounty hunters and proved his preeminence in this field. Chapman had this to say to me about arresting Luster in Febuary: "When he took off, every bounty hunter in the country was looking for him, and the title then was on the line. When the title was on the line, it was very important that I capture him. We captured him." Of course, that capture was in Mexico and not the United States.

Dog admitted to me that more than a few of his competitors have been jealous of him since capturing Luster made him famous. But his colleagues didn't just feel jealous. Dog's reckless image and biker outfits seemed out of step with the rest of the bounty hunters at the Vegas convention who preferred to be called "fugitive recovery agents," wore suits, and talked to me about the latest technological and computer methods of their trade. To those folks, Luster's arrest in Mexico was a classic example of Chapman's Rambo mentality and they were quick to point out the result was that Mexican authorities arrested Chapman and his crew.

After some time in a cell, Chapman and company posted bond and left. Now, apparently, Mexico wants Chapman back and has declared the bounty hunter a fugitive from Mexican justice; the result was Dog's arrest yesterday in Hawaii by a U.S. marshall.

When I spoke to him in February, Chapman was hardly of the mind to give up international bounty hunting. When I asked him who he most wanted to go after next, he didn't even pause before answering: Osama bin Laden. I just hope bin Laden's cave doesn't turn out to be in Mexico.

Anon is her Favorite Writer, Too

March 29, 2006 |  8:38 am
Jessicasimpson_iw8hs0kn I only noticed this story because it includes a photo of Jessica Simpson taken in Las Vegas a couple months ago. But once I started reading it this quote from an interview with her publicist, Rob Shutter, sure stood out. Shutter tells the Associated Press:
"Simpson and her family have anonymously contributed funds to a smattering of Mexican orphanages for several years now."
Let's add one more word to the list that for Jessica Simpson requires a dictionary. Jessica, honey, anonymous is defined as a form of giving in which your publicist does not make an announcement.

Every Lawsuit Tells A Story

March 6, 2006 |  7:27 am
Rodstewart_iuczhonc Last year I attended part of a trial in a case in which Rod Stewart was ordered to return to the Rio Hotel two million for a concert he canceled in December 2000. Stewart canceled the show citing his recovery from cancer. While the rock star, of course, wanted to reschedule the concert the Rio just wanted to get its two million back.
I arrived fairly sympathetic to any former member of the Faces. But it was also clear that Stewart's reps had bullied the casino into signing the show in the first place, hinting a heavily promoted Millennium concert at the Rio could be jeopardized by the stalled negotiations. The two million was far beyond what Stewart usually got for a show as his reps took full advantage of the legendarily deep pockets when it comes to guarantees in Vegas.  But then the concert, when it finally happened, did poorly. It was a dud. So, when Stewart canceled the second show, the Rio decided enough of Rod Stewart; when the case was over the jury concluded that the Rio was entitled to a refund.
Now the judge has finalized the order and the Review-Journal reports that Stewart has also been ordered to pay $981,926 in interest.
And, it still may not be over for the rocker because Glenn Puit also reports that the Rio now intends to go after Stewart for attorney fees. According to Rio attorney Steve Morris: "What they (Stewart's attorneys) did was they failed to produce information pertinent to the subject matter of the lawsuit, and they failed to do so repeatedly. It cost us a lot of time and an awful lot of money."
This could add up, so here is some advice for Rod: dude, you managed to have a hit with "Passion" and "Infatuation" which are like the same song. Just do that once more. But please, please, don't let this result in another album of standards to pay the bill. I think the bloom is off that rose. You go that route buddy there is a good chance one day soon there will be a lounge at the Rio with your name on the poster board announcing your two shows a night.
Of course, I should mention, before any of that happens, Stewart's lawyers plan an appeal.

Hair By Lenny Kravitz Coming to the Strip

December 13, 2005 |  9:58 am
Lennykravitz_gpp8w4ke The local restaurant industry e-mail newsletter, Eye on Vegas, published by Michael Politz of Las Vegas Food and Beverage Magazine is reporting a rumor that MGM is negotiating a deal to have rock star Lenny Kravitz open a hair salon in the Mirage casino.  They write:
One reason for Kravitz' venture, his early childhood dream of being a hairdresser.
This is so odd that despite common sense arguing strongly against it, I really want it to be true.

My Quest for Paris Hilton

November 28, 2005 |  7:12 am
Parishiltoncellphone_iqe2thkn Yes, I spoke to Paris Hilton it's true!  And, I have her cell phone number until she changes it next. So, how does something like that happen?
Let me start by saying I have a history of Hilton girl awareness going back to New Year's Eve 2000. I was covering a Guns & Roses show at the Hard Rock where I bumped into Neil Strauss (a music critic for The New York Times at that point and now the author of  everything from a porn star memoir to a book on his quest for studliness) who I knew slightly. Strauss was driven to distraction by the presence of a Hilton sister at the concert.  I don't remember which Hilton. "They are huge in New York," was the best explanation Neil could offer. A year later when the Palms opened there was Paris Hilton in a dress made of poker chips. All of this was before the television show, the video and too many controversies to keep track of all of which somehow made Paris Hilton a superstar for reasons that are honestly rather mysterious to me. No matter. I will leave it to the people who can quote Foucault to explain her success. After all, who better to explain the appeal of Paris than French cultural theorists.
The quest continues, after the jump

Burt Bacharach Speaks Truth to Power

November 11, 2005 |  8:44 am
Mike Weatherford of the Review-Journal has a surprising interview with Burt Bacharach who plays the Orleans tonight through Sunday. In it Bacharach, who wrote songs for the Carpenters and Dionne Warwick during the Vietnam era, talks about his opposition to the war in Iraq and his hostility to the Bush administration. He also claims he was fired from a corporate gig after a recent article about him appeared in the Los Angeles Times.

A Key for Carmen Elektra

November 3, 2005 |  5:47 am

Last night I got a message from Jeff Beacher of Beacher's Madhouse at the Hard Rock. Beacher is quickly becoming one of the most influential and connected people in Vegas entertainment, probably because he is so relentless or, to put it another way, pushy. It probably also has something to do with his ability to attract celebrities to his events, particularly hot female ones; from Tara Reid to the Hiltons, famous women love the rotund entertainer and impresario. Electranavarro_iff9lukf Anyway, Beacher left a message on my voice mail inviting me to come along with him to watch Carmen Electra get a key to the city later today. Last time I met Carmen Electra was backstage at the opening of a strip club which featured a performance from husband Dave Navarro's side project Camp Freddy. The amazing thing was Navarro did as much preening as she did. What a pretty couple. They won't remember me; I never stood between either of them and a mirror.
