Heat, Humidity To Blame

More than 9,500 Connecticut Light and Power customers were without power Tuesday evening after a piece of equipment at a city substation failed, possibly due to the heat, a company spokesman said.

The failure, reported around 6 p.m., occurred inside a substation in the western portion of the city, according to CL&P; spokesman Frank Poirot. Officials suspect the equipment stopped working due to the high demand of air conditioning units as temperatures reach into the 90s.

"We suspect the hot weather and high humidity to have played some part," Poirot said, adding that at its peak approximately 9,647 customers were without power.

The National Weather Service said temperatures throughout Connecticut were expected to hit the low 90s Tuesday afternoon, making it the hottest day of the year in the region. Forecasters said the high humidity made it feel like the high 90s.
