The sales and box-office stats for the "Harry Potter" series demonstrate why J.K. Rowling's hugely successful stories have become the gold standard for hit kids' books and movies based on them. The books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and the first movie alone made more than double that amount in ticket sales. In fact, the seven films (the series concludes with the second part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" this week) have each grossed roughly $900 million worldwide (except for the under-performing "Prisoner of Azkaban," which only pulled in $796 million).
