Where the Jobs Aren't: 10 Doomed Industries

10 Images Next »

By Jessica Stillman

The recovery may be rocky at the moment, but when it picks up steam, confidence will increase, jobs will return and the Great Recession will become an unpleasant memory (and perhaps a useful subject from which to draw policy lessons).

Even so, some industries will never recover because they're destined to go the way of milkmen and carriage makers. Which ones? Market research firm IBISWorld Inc. recently combed through a trove of data to determine the answer to this question.

The result: a list of the ten worst industries in America, ones that had a steep decline in revenue in the last decade and are forecasted to further contract even more in the next one. Some of the industries on this list will not shock you, but others will be surprising.

Extinction is a hard word, but unfortunately that’s what all these sectors are facing, due to external competition, technological change and lack of innovation. If you’re looking for work in one of these doomed fields, you may want to consider a career transition, and quickly.

enough with the pages
I wanted to see the industries that the article refers to. I DO NOT want to sit through a series of clicks and pages. Just do the article without all the theatrics.

I agree with you 100% I close out these slidshow presentations as soon as I open them up. I am sure another website will post the industries as a regular 1 or 2 page article shortly.

@djworklife Couldn't agree more. It seems to be a way for BNET to get people to stay longer in their pages...No time to click through 100 pages...checking out now

Agreed here, too. I've been doing that more and more with this site. I think they have intersting articles sometimes but I don't have time to play flip the pages.

Yes please - enough with the slideshow. I can read - I like to read and I don't need pictures to go with every paragraph. In short I'm not interested in content delivered this way. You're wasting time trying to deliver content to me this way. I'm off to something more pithy and informational and less E! entertainment like.

@djworklife Hear hear! Enough spreading stories across multiple pages. I like the content, but am less inclined to even visit the site because of the page splitting efforts. To add insult to injury, there is no print button to force content to one page.

I so concur with your reference and glad you posted comment. I figured
the article would have me jumping through hoops to get to the essentials. Because of the lay out and prior experience, I decided to not open the article. Therefore, the article was not read.
