Results from the 2010 Canadian Wine Awards
A complete list of results from the Wine Access 2010 Canadian Wine Awards
The 10th anniversary edition of the Wine Access Canadian Wine Awards has produced some historic moments.
For the first time, an Ontario winery was named as Winery of the Year. Tawse Winery received a record five golds, the most ever won by one winery.
Runner-up Inniskillin was the first ever to score a multiple-gold sweep in a category, going one-two-three with its brilliant icewines.
For the first time, a pinot noir has won Red Wine of the Year, thanks to a beautiful vintage from British Columbia’s Howling Bluff. (B.C’s overall performance for red wines was monumental.) And, also for the first time, a sparkling wine from Nova Scotia has won a gold medal, topping the bubbly category.
The overall quality level – with slightly more than half of nearly 1,000 entries taking a medal (scoring 86 or better) — was the best since the first awards were held in Toronto in 2001.
The reasons for this new degree of excellence are varied. But our most passionate and determined winemakers are not afraid to push the boundaries, despite our regulatory issues and challenging climate. They know that Canada must aim high to make its mark and that a new generation of informed, well-travelled, wine-drinking Canadians want Canadian wine to succeed.
The best Canadian wines are on the brink of stardom, both at home and abroad. Pardon us a bit of pride if we feel that ten years of conscientious and objective judging at the CWA has been an important part of the process.

I had the good fortune to be in Kelowna, BC last month and was given a glass of honey wine by Meadow Vista Honey Wines (Judith Barta, owner). I have to tell you, it's the best mead I have ever tried. Judith is upbeat and helpful, and her knowledge precedes her youthfullness. I wish we could get this mead in Ontario.
