Crysis 2 DirectX 11 Update Released

We spent some time today with Crysis 2's much-anticipated visual upgrade.

Shooter fans: Today was the day Crytek officially released its DirectX 11 update to Crysis 2--an update many a PC gamer believed should have been part of the game in the first place. Regardless, we took some time today to download both the DirectX 11 update and the high-res texture pack. And this Wednesday, there shall be even more downloadable happiness available, in the form of a mission editor, which I'm hoping to spend some time with, if time permits.

The updates add features you'd hope to see in a DirectX 11 game: tessellation, high dynamic range motion blur, improved water rendering, and more. In effect, the changes take an already attractive game and make it look even more stunning. Particle shadows and motion blur are particular striking in sequences with a lot of destruction, and the HDR post processing makes moving from a darker area into an area bathed in sunlight momentarily breathtaking. My work PC took only the slightest frame rate hit when compared to the original, only rarely dropping under a solid 60 frames per second.

The recent trailer does a good job of comparing the enhancements. In addition, we took a few gameplay movies and screens for you to gaze at, though the differences at a glance will likely be minimal to those not searching for them. I am hoping to get some pre- and post-patch screens tonight to share tomorrow, but I hope you enjoy these in the meanwhile!

    @666shan666 - good point, a lot of people don't understand the difference between a PC gamer and a PC enthusiast- you can be both (moi!), but they're not the same thing.

    You are absolutely right, that's what I am saying. I am not jealous of consoles but I only dislike that the developers if don't want to release or cancel the PC version game in future, then they don't announce the PC version simply.

    So, many friends asks me if you have ability to own a good PC. then why not buy a console but I know it is not affordable for for me, the reasons are: 1st, I use my PC for so many works not only for gaming.
    2nd, In my country the consoles have double priced then US price, even when I convert them in my countries currency. So buying a console is loss for me.

    I bought an Nvidia Geforce Gtx 260 two years ago for a bit over 300 dollars, not a "8800gt" but yeah, now Crytek wants me to get a new card to play the only game that actually requires a card better than that. To play the same games console owners can play on high settings you need to pay far more but in the end, the only real pc exclusives these days are mmos and im not interested in mmos. Also max, those aren't the "only games icould come up with" those are the only exclusives in the top pc lists for 2011. Plus there are a lot of rumors that diablo 3 might be released for consoles... like nearly every formerly pc exclusive franchise

    In all honesty, it's just sad. I understand developers are in it to make money since it is a business, but they're just killing PC right now. It's good we still see developers like Valve and Blizzard not going down the dumbed down experience route, even if their games hit consoles it's always good to know it still plays better on PC (L4D and TF2 for example, and not to mention SC1 on N64...ooooh boy was that just a horrible try). I hope that one day developers will realize that dumbing down a game just to sell copies is not a good way to keep a fanbase strong...but then again, it doesn't seem like they care about their fanbase anymore anyways :S

    I seem to have found my own answer. No crashes or stuttering if I turn on V-sync. Action is limited to 30 fps, but I am not picky. Not sure I can really tell the difference between 30 and 60 anyhow, and it still looks great! Would still like any suggestions though.

    Thanks,

    I just downloaded the updates for Crysis 2 and they are in fact beautiful. Question though. I have a 570 Superclocked Graphics Card, 12 GB Ram, and an I7 950 processor. Even with what I consider to at the very least be an "Enthusiast" configuration, frame rates occasionally drop to the 14-16fps range from the normal 40-40 range. All settings on Ultra. Any thoughts on what might be causing this occasional drop in FPS, and how I might remedy it. If I had to turn a setting or 2 down from Ultra, which would have the least affect?

    Thanks a million,
    Ross

    games are games regardless of whatever platform you're playing on, I loved the witcher 2, it's visuals are breath taking and the story line is easily one of the best i've played in a long time, but most importantly the decisions and choices they give you in the game, that is how it should be done, mass effect 2 pales in comparison to the effects and types of decisions that you make in the witcher 2. Problem? Few people I know of have actually played it. I'm ecstatic that it's being released on consoles that way every gamer out there can enjoy it. I'm proud of my PC I put a lot of work and effort into building it and maintaining it, but I also love my consoles, I share a lot of memories with them as well. At the end of the day my desktop wallpaper says it all, ps3 controller, wii controller, xbox 360 controller, and mouse side by side and forever my gaming machines of choice

    Torchlight dev is a small team. Not a AAA. Also it is on Xbox and will outsell PC in a short while according to them. From snippets in interviews and such they have hinted at T2 being taken to the 360 before they even work on their MMO. They also signed/sold a good part of Runic Games to Perfect World somewhat recently. They were very happy with their 500,000 sales. A small dev can do that. TW2 is going to the 360 as well. Not saying they are idiots. Pointing out they go multi-platform many times because they have to due to the demands, economic and otherwise, of the gaming industry. If the graph showed digital and boxed PC games being 7.0 compared to nearly half (4.3 vs 8.0) of what consoles put up, we would see more stuff released for us.

    Even Diablo 3 is going multi-platform.

    You are saying that those developers are id!ots who make games for PC, like Torchlight only for Mac & PC, The Witcher 2, Trackmania only for PC.

    Are they don't want to earn their bread & butter, why not they simply skip the PC version and earn lot of money by making console games?

    i have no grudge on you, just asking.

    Hell, its about time they release DX11, now I can played on my brother crazily powered PC, still Battlefield Bad Company 2 still retained the title on most crazy graphic list. Hopefully Crysis 2 topple my ranked and triumph.

    One of the best shooters on the PC is being dumbed down...sigh.

    You really must be Einstein to spend $300 on a low end video card, low end cards such as a 8800GT which cost less than Black Ops for the console. $300 dollars would be something like a Geforce 590.

    Oh btw you only named 3 games for the PC, battlefield 3 which will be superior for the PC and it is lead developed for the PC. You're also forgetting number 1 multiplayer games such as Starcraft 2.

    @devrindare
    Is it the developers fault... or the consumers?
    Who do we blame? The company adapting to it's consumers... or are the consumers adapting to developers?
    As any industry will show you the movers will go where the money is. Who chooses where the money is? Consumers. With your wallets you vote. More wallets, more votes. If PC gamers came out in droves and voted as often (and as much) as their console brethren then games would not get cancelled. It is just too risky or not viable in many cases. Unfortunate but true. Is it arbitrary preference for consoles or a hard learned fact from developers? You think that through and choose.

    PS
    Look at the graph for the sales "slump":
    8.0 Consoles compared to: 1.8 (Boxed) + 2.5 (Digital) + 2.6 (MMO) = 6.9. You have to add in Social to surpass. Or Casual Websites. This is considering that MMO figure is (boxed + digital and subscription fees) all in one.

    Can you really blame anyone for going for their bread and butter, and only after, maybe going for the jam/jelly? I find it hard to.

    i really have no idea what u guys r talking about. what i see from these post is consoles fanboys r jealous and pc gamers r trying to prove their platform is superior. GROW UP. pc WILL always be superior and there is nothing to brag about it. It doesnt mean consoles cant give satisfying gaming experience including graphic aspect. And about those hardware prices, PS3 cost around $800 to make one few years back but now its around $450. a typical gaming pc cost just around $800

    Draken_Domingo :: better yet, if they can spend $10,000 on a "computer" then they can easily spend $300 dollars on a console... all to play a $60 dollar game, that pretty much plays the same on either format. Now that I find tearfully hilarious.

  • devrindare

    @Draken_Domingo
    brother, you are absolutely right but the thing I am saying here is that, the developers are responsible for this sh!t, none other.
    The reason this dispute of PC vs console arises is because developers started giving preference to the consoles.
    For example, Shadows of the Damned & DMC are in my following list for PC one day they both dissapered and everybody know the reason that the PC version of the Game is cancelled.

    What do you say about this?

  • Draken_Domingo

    Posted Jun 29, 2011 10:23 pm PT

    In all honestly, I'm outright sick of seeing the typical PC vs Console bs. Why can't everyone just agree to disagree on this subject? There are games that play better on PC, and games that play better on console, and it's all personal preference. I love PC gaming because you put a lot of devotion into both your games and your rig, and usually the PC exclusives are a lot deeper and more involving. And I love console gaming for different reasons, I don't perfer both but I don't hate either one. I believe that makes a true hardcore gamer, someone willing to just love video games as a whole.

  • Aravesque

    The PC never ages, therefore its always improving and moving forward one step at a time leaving the consoles at stone-age era.

    Really?
    Those are the only 3 PC titles you can come up with?
    "Maybe you only pay attention to shooters, like most pc gamers."

    Secondly, why are you comparing a list of "upcoming" PC titles to a bunch of already released PS3 games, some of which are almost 5+ years old?

    EDIT: You're expressing a matter of relativity when you say things like, "PC gaming costs too much", moreover, i dunno where you're buying your video cards but 300 bucks is NOT what you should be paying for a low end video card.

    EDIT 2: "Crytek wants me to pay $500 to see their advanced effects", again wrong, you don't need to spend that kind of money for a decent video card with DX11 capabilities. Whether you care enough to get one or not is a matter of personal choice.

    Either way it sounds like you need to do a little reading and shopping around as far as PC gaming is concerned.

    Personal insults?
    Where?
    Ok lemme think, All of these games have high ratings, are well known, and are not indie games/or they are upcoming. Infamous 2, infamous 1, Resistance 1, 2, 3, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, Uncharted 1, 2, 3, Mgs4, The Last Guardian, WipEout HD, Heavy Rain, Yakuza 3 and 4, God of War 3, Littlebigplanet 1 and 2, Demons Souls, Ratchet, Warhawk, Starhawk, Motorstorm series, Gran Turismo 5, Twisted Metal, Journey, Valkyria Chronicles, Modnation Racers, Socom etc... And i feel like you are going to say "Ohnfoweanov none of those count becuzz i don't like em, or "None ofthose count because they aren't all upcoming games"
    Well heres your list of "upcoming" games that aren't indie games because you said they don't count
    Star Wars the Old Republic, Diablo 3, Dota 2. Also i don't see why you are trying to argue with me, i just said that pc gaming costs too much based on the amount of exclusive games released, if the graphics card costs 300 dollars(thats a fairly low end one) and you only end up spending $80 or so on the games you use it for, i dont really see the point... I play alot of pc games and my machine can run nearly every game (including crysis 2) on highest settings, but now that Crytek wants me to pay $500 to see their advanced effects when not a single game has actually pushed the graphics card i got two years ago i think i'm done upgrading until the new consoles are released.

    If you spend over $1,000 on a pc you are paying too much and got ripped off plus your pc gamer buddies probably suckered you into getting very expensive not needed pc parts but whatever its capitalism. The difference with DX11 is nice but imo not a big deal and/or difference.

    @666shan666
    "$11,300" Exactly, why did you spend over eleven thousand dollars on a computer when the only two games that actually take advantage of those specs are crysis 1 and now crysis 2... Thats why console gamers are debating this, they only have to pay 300 and they get more exclusives and the multiplatform games typically look about the same because very few developers have the pc as their lead platform (bf3 will woot). I only play pc games that are significantly better on pc, that normally ends up being valve games and indie games.

  • max_1111

    Just because developers don't develop EXCLUSIVELY for a particular platform does not mean said platform is "falling".

    How many exclusives are there for PS3 or XBOX?
    I can probably count them on one hand.

    @ColdfireTrilogy
    My point is, cards with the exact same specs as these dx10 cards do support directx11, this is why certain cards have been hacked to run different versions of directx. There is no reason why someone should have to shell out 500 dollars for the one game that fully supports directx11. I don't think many developers will support directx11 until the next batch of consoles are released with dx11 support(hopefully). Games like Dirt support dx11 but they don't use it to its full potential. Because the consoles don't support these effects, developers don't want to waste their time working on dx11 when less than 1/10 of their audience is going to see it.

Not many exclusives are made for PC anymore because its a dying market. You claim to have some knowledge of how console tech works and yet you just compare it to a smartphone (which is borderline ridiculous, btw.) There is a reason the PC was a hit in the 90's and isnt used so much anymore.
