Despite a season disrupted by injury, England defender Glen Johnson feels he has made good progress with the national squad and is hoping he can maintain his position at right-back come the World Cup.
“It’s the worst thing that can happen to a footballer. The last thing you want is to be bed-bound or sat on the sofa because you’re injured and you can’t play,” said the Liverpool defender at a recent Nationwide roadshow event.
However, from an England perspective and with just a few weeks to go until South Africa 2010, it seems Johnson has come back to fitness at the vital time.
“I will be fit [for the World Cup]. I don’t feel like I’ve played a full season...I’ve only played about 30 games, so I do feel fresh.
“I’ve played the last few games and put a little run together but I don’t take anything for granted. I know I’ve got to work hard and keep the shirt.”
