Stephen Warnock, England

Stephen Warnock

Current club: Aston Villa

Stephen is a left-back, born in Ormskirk in Lancashire, who was a professional with Liverpool as a teenager and finally made it into the first team in his seventh season, appearing in 19 Premier League matches in 2004-05.

In earlier seasons he had turned out on loan for Bradford City and Coventry City. He switched to Blackburn Rovers in 2006 and was very close to being an ever-present in two Premier League seasons, featuring in 37 matches and scoring one goal in each, before Aston Villa swooped to sign him in 2009.

He played on the losing side for Villa against Manchester United in the League Cup Final and Fabio Capello brought this speedy, tough-tackling defender back into the England squad.

He had made his debut for the seniors as a substitute for Wayne Bridge in the friendly against Trinidad & Tobago in June 2008. A player who has had his fair share of injuries, Stephen was capped at Schoolboy and Youth levels but missed out with the Under-21s.
