Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher

Current club: Liverpool

Jamie Carragher is a Liverpool stalwart. Having progressed through the Anfield academy, the versatile centre-back has now appeared over 400 times for the Reds.

The boy from Bootle signed professional terms with Liverpool in October 1996, after a successful apprenticeship that included picking up an FA Youth Cup winners’ medal in the same year. He made his first team debut in January ’97 and a month later – still only 19 years old – made his debut for England Under-21s.

He went on to appear for the Young Lions 27 times, a record for some time until it was surpassed by Scott Carson and now James Milner.

In 1999 Jamie made his senior debut for the Three Lions, coming on for Rio Ferdinand in a friendly against Hungary in Budapest. He came on as a substitute in 13 of his first 18 appearances but in 2005-06 became a regular starter and was part of Sven Goran Eriksson’s squad for the 2006 World Cup.

He played in four of England’s five games at Germany ’06 as Eriksson’s men reached the quarter-finals, but he played only another five games for the national team after the tournament before announcing his retirement from international football.

Three years on and after another impressive season for Liverpool, however, Carragher is back in the England fold as part of Fabio Capello’s 2010 World Cup squad.
