Good review. I'm sad to see the horror fade. F.E.A.R 2 scared the crap out of me. Still gonna get it though.

Carolyn IS a transexual, she is also a great reviewer. If you don't like her voice you could go read the written review, they often go into more depth anyway. Everyone has a right to their opinion and to speak how they like but please be more considerate in the future, Carolyn has feelings just the same as everyone else and doesn't need to be degraded here online. Thank you.

Oh and I def agree that the insistence on multi-platforming everything is ruining the PC market. I'm guessing it will be a little better when the next-gen consoles finally arrive, but yeah PCs games are being kneecapped badly because of consoles lagging on processing power.

The co-op looks pretty cool, but I am bummed that it's not as scary as the first one, which blew my mind when I played it. I never got the F.E.A.R. 2 cuz it looked terrible. This looks a little better, but probably not enough to make me rush to buy it. Might be worth it for ~$15.

Correct, but now one dares to do a PC exclusive nowdays. They are too afraid of piracy, and of bad sales, because a game that would use a full potential of todays PC could NEVER run on consoles. The sad thing is that we are also losing Witcher 2 as an exclusive to Xbox 360,if CD Project RED makes the next Witcher game Xbox orriented,we lose another great franchise.

    @Cataclysmm
I fully agree with you.Consolistaion really destroyed a lot of great once PC oriented franchises, like F.E.A.R,Dragon Age,Crysis,Far Cry,Dungeon Siege, etc. There are more of them, but I just cant think of them right now.

from the day they cross platform fear,it turns to sh..t,this one is what FEAR 2 Supposed to be,but it,s still no FEAR 1,they hyping up Xbox because it,s a failed system, and they will never tell you,but i guess the fan boys are going to jump on me and say different, and Crysis 2 and up is another dumb down game,it makes no sense for me to have a powerful Pc and it won't make a difference if the games are going to look the same on the xbox and pc,i won't give up on pc though still waiting for diablo 3 i hope they don't mess that up,as to what person say down bottom there, hope the witchers 2 sells well and make them start making more PC exclusive,it, still breaks my heart, how they did dragon age 2 so wrong....and another thing why don't they leave the Pc version the way it is powerful and all,and dumb down the console version so it can run it,why they keep trying to make the game look and feal grafically heavy,on all platform and f...king up the game in the process, they know it won't work, only way that would work is if the consols have some powerful geforce 590X2=4 sli some dominator memories quad core processors Lol something like that are better,if they don't update them old out dated consoles we are going to be stuck in 02 that,s just my take on this gaming Depression.

  • RCT4ShouldExist

    Posted Jun 26, 2011 8:58 pm PT

Fast paced FPS and horror don't mix. Think about it... what scares you? Helplessness or the ability to blast your way out of anything. Go play amnesia. Yes I am posting these as I go down the list reading all the stupid comments.

  • RCT4ShouldExist

    Posted Jun 26, 2011 8:56 pm PT

Its not 7 years of technical development. 2 years after the 360 came out the technology was available on High end cards. Now it is available on low end cards. Mid range cards will have your game running in 1080p with much higher frame rates. Your xbox is a very outdated machine. They don't want you to think about that.

  • RCT4ShouldExist

    Posted Jun 26, 2011 8:52 pm PT

Jeeze you people expect way too much from cross platform games. Lower your standards. The consoles will hold everything up. Hopefully the fact that Witcher 2 is very profitable will encourage more developers to make PC exclusives. If its good enough... PEOPLE WILL BUY IT (except for amnesia that game was just too small, unknown, and easy to download. The game is nothing short of genius though)

  • RCT4ShouldExist

    Posted Jun 26, 2011 8:48 pm PT

you will not be seeing graphics improvements unless the game is a PC exclusive, as long as the xbox 360 is the major platform. Cross platform= Nothing but gameplay tweaks. Get used to it we have a couple more years to go. Thats why you can't be paying for this BS. Its kinda fun but id be pissed if i spent 60 on it. Pay for Crysis 1, Amnesia the dark descent (Scariest game to date without a doubt) and the Witcher 2. Mod your xbox its the only way to dabble without getting RIPPED. Also buy a mid range graphics card. Never before has hardware this low tech maxed out in 1080p (unlike practically every console game) most cross platform games. This generation of games is a joke. You will only see improvements on PC exclusives.

I was COMPLETELY addicted to FEAR 1 when it came out and played it for a good 4 years after it was released. FEAR 2 was a MAJOR disappointment, you didn't even get to continue to story of the prototype and Fettel. Not only that but the graphics were TERRIBLE! I figured the FEAR games were going to be known for their advanced graphics but the first game was the only one that pushed the envelope. Now we get to FEAR 3, while it is nowhere near as bad as FEAR 2, it is still not FEAR 1. As far as the actual gameplay goes, FEAR 3 is a blast. It feels smooth, and they did a good job of creating that hyper frenetic action. It's only the graphics that hold the game back. Honestly I had ZERO expectations for this game after playing FEAR 2 and after seeing screenshots of FEAR 3 but this game is a lot of fun. It won't bring you back to your FEAR 1 glory days buy I can guarantee you will have fun shootin' soldiers in slo-mo. The story is actually more fleshed out than it has been in any of the previous games (prolly thanks to John Carpenter). Either way if you want a good shooter, this is prolly it but I would wait until it hits $30-$40

Right After i play and finish the campaign mode of this game (and some hours of multiplayer of course)i played it's predecessors (in the highest difficulty of course) in order to make a good comparison between them and this particular chapter, and yes this game is not as scary as the firsts two (even so it has some scary moments) and you can feel how the mechanics of the game are totally changed, the dark creepy corridors, the sequences of Alma, ghosts and cloaked assasins chasing you, the creepy sound of things falling, moving or cracking every 10 seconds, the tension that produce the feeling of being constantly stalked are gone (even if f.e.a.r.2 wasn't as scary as the first one ,it still kept part of the the tension of it's predecessor),but it's not that bad, it seems that Day one believed that it was good make a complete turn to the gameplay making it full of action (totally full of action, and the many challenges that you can complete give the game a high replayable value) ,even if this game feels very different from the two first it's very fun to play and for me that's what really matters.

I can't really say im surprised that this has lost its scare factor. The second one only had a few brief moments but overkilled alma's lets jump out at you and attack you moments. Looks better gameplay wise but still not like the original which made me turn around so many times to see nothing but creepy sounds.

Its a sad day for the fear franchise... so much disappointment with this game. Its just not the fear it once was. I cant see them making another game after they sink the franchise with this one.

I loved the original F.E.A.R. because the name said everything the game-play was very good and the AI was really amazing( it took me a while to pass the game on top difficulty)
Then came FEAR 2 not bad but not as good as the first one(my personal opinion) but now I'm not even sure if I'm going to buy this one

well i think that the second fear was more cool and creepy than the first one....the first was a little simple at times for me, almost the same scenarios and it wasnt that scary as others may say....also the multiplayer and the rank system of fear 3 sounds very cool.
    love FEAR series....

I just long for a game that can capture the true elements of the horror franchise while simultaneously utilizing the fast-paced atmosphere of an FPS. The original FEAR will always hold a place dear in our hearts, but why can't anybody manage to create a similar experience?

They should've dropped the entire Alma storyline with F3AR. Why not go a completely different angle? Something fresh? A different city, a different hero? Maybe play as a female psychic with repressed memories? It doesn't take very much creative breath to come up with something, and there's always tons of horror inspiration that can be drawn from film classics too. I just remember those first few months of playing Condemned and Fear back to back and genuinely thinking I found a genre that manages to toy with my emotions. The point of FEAR was to keep you on the edge. You really had no idea what was going on, and walking down the dark corridor at your own pace just waiting for the door to slam or the light to burst was the most exhilarating feeling. It's the little things, really. Too bad the series went a completely opposite direction.

I'm critical of the review. There are points where, tragically, the video footage doesn't demonstrate what she's talking about in the commentary: the player never seems to take cover and the flawed AI is never ostensive. Several statements simply describe features of the game without giving a critique.

why oh why oh why do developers keep thinking that R2 works as 'Fire'? BECAUSE IT F***ING DOESNT. NEVER HAS NEVER WILL, STOP DOING IT YOU CLUST F***'S!!!!!!! it feels wrong what with every other game being R1. How hard is it to remember when your making a game that R1 IS THE FIRE BUTTON, F********* ME!! and they dont even give you the option to change it. I remember this same thing with Red Dead....K***eads!!!!!

Fairly accurate review. It isn't a very scary game, but it is atmospheric like the 2nd one (which I actually liked). The game doesn't look THAT bad maxed out, certainly not Witcher 2 or Metro 2033 level but it gets the job done. The cover system is great however, very easy to use. A good addition to the FEAR series in my mind.

Doesn't look scary to me at all like the first game. I agree with the review, it plays more like a military shooter. The first game was by far the best

  • jmace1

    Posted Jun 24, 2011 9:55 pm PT

I sincerely don't believe there has been a single improvement to the FEAR series after the the original released. Playing as Paxton looks like a gimmick since technically there is very little difference in gameplay between him and Point Man. For example, is there a difference between shooting beams of energy or bullets? No. Is there a difference between playing the solider or taking over a enemy soldier then rinse and repeat? Very little. It appears the only unique ability Paxton has is his ability to suspend an enemy which only makes the game easier. Speaking of easier, the mech segments have always been a joke in the FEAR games and I don't understand why they continue to act like it is impressive to essentially to cut out all difficulty they game has for certain segments by making your character, for all intensive purposes, invincible. I'd play games with cheats or turn on God mode if I wanted that.

This is a perfect example of series that should have had one entry and then laid to rest. But noooo, Warner Brothers realizes that all too many gamers are willing to buy a downgraded and rehashed version of the original FEAR and now we have two lackluster sequels. Carolyn, all I can say is your review is much more forgiving than what mine would have been.

@xan114 well if you own a Radeon 9800GTX , maybe you'll enjoy the game on PC, but for people who've seen games like BFBC2, Mafia 2 and other DX11 titles , tend to disagree with you 100%. This looks like a Dx9 grade game for graphics.
