MIDLAND — Officials say two children playing with a lighter are to blame for a wildfire that destroyed three mobile homes in rural West Texas and left about a dozen people homeless — including the children.
Midland County Fire Marshal Dale Little says the fire started about 1 p.m. Thursday about five miles southeast of Midland. He says the children — ages 5 and 6 — were burning paper in a carport when the flames spread suddenly.
Ramona Hernandez tells the Midland Reporter-Telegram that her daughter, who is the mother of the two children, did not have fire insurance on the trailer. April Hernandez suffered injuries to her feet while fleeing, but no other injuries were reported.
