Tournament Background

In 2011, the PTT Pattaya Open is celebrating 20 years on the WTA Tour.

The tournament was first staged at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya in 1991, with a prize money purse of US$75,000. Winner of the inaugural event was Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia. Since then the tournament has continued to develop year on year and in 2009 was upgraded to be part of the new international series of tournaments, which have minimum prize money of US$220,000. As well as being upgraded in 2009, the tournament was renamed the PTT Pattaya Open, when PTT Public Company Limited joined as the title sponsor alongside Pattaya City.

The tournament upgrade in 2009 led to improvements at the Dusit Thani, including the addition of a fourth for practice on-site. In 2011 an additional north grandstand will be utilized again, adding extra capacity of 350 seats to the venue.

Over the years the tournament has hosted some of the top stars in women’s tennis: Anna Kournikova, Martina Hingis, Vera Zvonareva, Patty Snyder, Caroline Wozniacki and Conchita Martinez to name a few. In its new format the PTT Pattaya Open will continue to attract both the establish players and the rising stars of women’s tennis.

The PTT Pattaya Open also has a proud record of providing opportunities for local Thai players to compete at the highest level in women’s tennis.
Well over 100 wild cards have been given out to Thai tennis players since the tournament was first held in 1991. The policy will be continued in 2011 with the best performing Thai players being given the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best players in the world.

Throughout its existence, the PTT Pattaya Open has proven to be one of the most popular events on the tour and has consistently had a higher level of players competing in the event than equivalent tournaments elsewhere. It is one of only a few tournaments on the WTA Tour to be staged in a beachside location and certainly no other event has its match courts so close to the sea. It is this combination of the unique location and Thai hospitality that brings players back again year after year to Pattaya.

The PTT Pattaya Open has been at the forefront of women’s tennis for longer than any other professional tennis tournament in the region. Its popularity and reputation continues to grow, which is a tribute to the venue, the organization and to Pattaya City authorities whom have given their full support to the tournament throughout 20 years of unbroken competition at the Dusit Thani Hotel.
