Haloid
Added by montyoum on Apr 17, 2007 @ 3:58am
Hello everyone Monty here again with another movie. I know I promised that this movie was going to be released on the 22nd, but due to the fact that I foresee some impending issues the web publish is now...

First to be said about this movie is that I sorta sold out. Though I'm supposed to be working on the next episode of my own animated series. The fact that the last movie I published here in January received only about 4,000 in the first 2 weeks whereas a movie of less quality I published here a year ago received 20,000 in the first 2 days. I couldn't help but want to pull a sort of "publicity stunt" here with this movie.
One thing that you can't deny about Halo is that it's popular. In fact the Halo community is so large that if anything Halo related that surfaces on the web, it gets notice. The movie I submitted here over a year ago that contained a Halo-esque character was wildy more popular than the movie I had submitted more recently despite it being technically better.
It hit me with some minor distaste that the world as it is doesn't really want new stuff. They want to see new versions of the stuff they already know... Sorta. It could also be viewed in such that with the growing number of characters and stories out there. By trying to sell my own original story with my (somewhat) original characters I am vying for the attention of people who already have well enough to look at. Looking at it that way it's not so bad that when you think Im competing against the studios out there that spend a fortune creating stories and characters they're struggling to sell as well.
As an amateur I can't really fight standing on the shoulders of already established characters. But it can at least be admired as to what I do with them. It should also be noted that I am BY NO MEANS a real 3D artist. Real 3D artists would find my methods laughable and never touch to programs I use.
So this here project started late January shortly after I finished my last movie. I had the concepts in my head of what to do for a cool Halo fight long ago when I played the game. It was only triggered after I'd come across the various reverse engineering techniques that had surfaced to extract Halo 2 models. Two weeks go by where I'd research the methods to be able to obtain the models myself, and now I'm working on an entirely different level.
Project Haloid begins early February 2007.

Music
After watching this vid, some of the choices I made can be seen very obviously, some perhaps not. First step I made was choosing a soundtrack that would ultimately influence the layout of the movie. The song of choice ended up being "The Burly Brawl" by Don Davis Vs Juno reactor from the Matrix Reloaded. The high pace and very pronounced notes were utilized cinematically almost throughout the entire sequence. The slo mo's and high notes made for very easy choices as to what to work plan for and how I should do it. The past two months have gone by with me listening to the track constantly on repeat at work driving and while animating. Visualizing it as a template became especially useful for storyboarding, as it was also very helpful to in a way to be able to be "working" even when away from my computer. The tracks around the centerpiece of the video more or less just fell into place. A great mix of the Metroid ending theme by The Wingless from www.ocremix.org fit well into the credits without question. As well as my favorite track from Halo 2 In Amber Clad for the opening, despite the fact that I truly assed out those scenes to get this finished on time.
Character
As I explained above in the choice of character was a means of gaining publicity. Further looking into the concept, I discovered that the Master Chief Vs Samus debate had started quite a while ago. It makes sense to ask that sort of question. They of course are both enhanced humans in powered up mechanized suits. But in the end even though the basis for the characters were already established, I ended up improvising from the knowledge that I had, as well as the information I had to research and obtain from various sources to put together two characters that would fight on even ground.
Such can be explain in this Internet styled FAQ/FAC (frequently asked questions/fucking annoying comments)

Internet: Why didn't you use the Samus Suit from Metroid instead of the stoopider looking one from SSBM?
Me: Among the reverse engineering method existing for Nintendo games. It was more difficult (more or less impossible) to get a decent Metroid Prime Samus. I did on the other hand make several posts in a multitude of forums (something I hate doing) and got little or no response. I didn't want to be too bothersome to the great people behind the engineering methods. As a busy artist like everyone else, I respect their time. In the end you just end up working with what you've got.
Internet: Why does it seem like Master Chief is getting completely PWNED by not only Samus with the suit, but Samus without the suit. That's totally not fair.
Me: Well I think the battle between them both armored is pretty well balanced. As for Zero Samus knocking Master Chick (Master Chief) around without even needing her suit, it's not really explained anywhere, but MC technically wasn't fighting back because she was in love... mwahahahahahahahah
Internet: WTF?!?! Samus doesn't have rocket boots?!?! I hate you!!
Me: This was a tough choice for me, yes Samus has rocket boots because the way the storyboard played out in my mind needed more than the little I saw of Zero Samus' abilities in the upcoming Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
Internet: Master Chief should've won you suck!!!
Me: You obviously don't get the point of this movie
Internet: Samus should've won you suck!!!
Me: You obviously don't get the point of this movie
Internet: OMG you ROXORZ!!!! Can you make (insert character here) VS (insert character here)?
Me: I would love to get as much done as possible. These days I can't really tell what my schedule is like other than that I can be sure to be busy. On top of another videogame fight that I have planned. I would also like to continue my own original story too. It's hard to tell cause the movie I made before this one took me 8 months, whereas this one took me 2. I'll hope for the next ones to be just as quick if not quicker, but as of now I have about 17 different movies planned only in my mind.
Internet: What the hell was that shield shit that Samus did? That was stupid!! And why does the Master Chief/Chick whatever blow up?!!?
Me: Like I said before, the storyboarding comes before anything else. And that point in the song called for a climactic pause. On top of that, symbolic of their character, I feel Samus has a more feminine touch, which in turn implies protectiveness. Just as well, the Spartans more soldier-like and to the point. Since I've read all three Halo books, I had a lot to go by to know what they're capable of. Including the ability to self-destruct.
Internet: WHYYYYYY did you make Master chief a girl!?!?!? Master chiefs not a girl?!?!?! WHAT TEH HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU YOU FAG?!?!?!
Me: In the Halo story according to the books there were actually 32 Spartan soldiers, including women. If you look closely you can actually see the number 458 on the "Master Chick's" suit. 458 being the number of the Spartan that made a Cameo in the Dead or Alive series. Not much thinking went into it further than that though. Plus hot lesbians are awesome.
Internet: I love you will you have my babies?!?!?!?
Me: Sorry but I'm taken
Internet: Your stuff is soo good! Why aren't you doing this for a living?
Me: Good question. People keep saying that but no one wants to hire me hahah. But seriously, it's more like, I wonder if I can even do this for money? One thing about artists, the difference between being a fine artist and a commercial artist is pretty huge. And still I don't know where I stand. I work in a unique way with a unique workflow. I have very specific beliefs that determine how I do everything I do. It's stuff that can't ever be questioned, yet at the same time I work a full time job among the many other things that fill up my days time. I dream about the day that I could be doing this stuff full time while being able to maintain the costs of living. I wonder how having money involved would change it. I'm completely self-taught with everything I do, and I have a pretty good notion that my methods and workflow does not match up with the conventional ways of doing things. If I were to get a job in this sort of industry, it seems like I would have to start off at a very high position. But I could never ask anyone to put their money on the line for sake of my personal quirks, it's just not who I am. Will I ever earn the right for artistic funding?
Internet: How can master chick/chief have that spark even though she was actually a girl?
Me: Think about it....

Internet: Can you teach me to do stuff like this?
Me: I would love to. Unfortunately as you can tell I'm a very busy person. I hope to see more stuff like mine out there considering in all the time I've spent looking, I've come across very few completed animations. Lots of trailers and tests etc. but very few final projects. There certainly should be more out there, the technology and software is available. Yet the fact that there are so few hobbyist animators leads me to think that the problem is more than just that.
Internet: What the hell is with the ending sequence?!?! Why such gay music?!
Me: Yes I like KPop (Korean Pop Music A.K.A. GayPop) And I love dancing. Part of my talent is my sense of Rhythm, as well as my mondo DDR Skills. Though since I did the scene last as an extended scene, with as tired as I was by the end of this project. I again assed this one out as well. Cause it certainly couldve been better.
Internet: OMGZ This is awesome!!! Please make more!!!
Me: Currently I have about 17 movies storyboarded in my mind to a bunch of different songs, and the list keeps growing. 11 of those movies are of my original series with my friends and I in a story that I want to tell. The other 6 are with characters I know you would recognize. Like I said earlier, this was to gain publicity to promote my original work, which I would prefer to tell. Will you still be around in a few months when I make another story of characters you haven't seen? Given time I hope my characters become somewhat of a staple just the same. One thing that comes to mind when I think of this balance, the Directors of Star wars, The Matrix Trilogy, Final Fantasy the Spirits Within. As talented as those directors are, and as much esteem and respect they've earned in their past works. What must be maintained is the balance in what I want to show you and what you want me to show you.
In regards to my work, since I work for free, because no one is my boss, everyone is my boss. Knowing that I will earn your respect, and hopefully, I will be able to keep that balance.

Personally Id like to point a few more things.
In the credits are list several websites of fellow artists that I respect and admire. I took the time while working on this to place some of their relevant artwork onto billboards and wherever I could in the background, even though they pass fairly quickly and blurry. Even though I didnt get to everyone, Id like to give a shout out to my fellow artistic and cinematic colleagues
-Alvin Earthworm of the Super Mario Brothers Z series. Keep going I wanna see what happens next! I like it more than the actual Dragon Ball Z series!!!

- Reubenkee is an uberly talented Composer and #1 Mugen Creator. Promise Ill get to animating that Sexy Robot someday soon!! Cant wait till your new character comes out!!!

-Rob Denblyker Creator of the Joe Zombie series, you have to finish! I have to see how it ends!!!
-Most importantly Proxicide If I hadnt seen MK vs SF 1 those many years ago I would still be caught in a limbo of self doubt about being able to convey a story with limited resources. Keep going forward, you never know who you might be inspiring.

Dead Fantasy I
Added by montyoum on Oct 10, 2007 @ 12:44pm
Hey folks how's it going?
I've got another movie here. I had this one in my mind awhile ago and I finally got the chance to get to it after all the hubbub surrounding my previous movie and what it did for my life.
I started this one about last July and gradually worked into it piece by piece. First thing I usually decide on when I make a movie is the "why is this cool?" And as far as this movie goes, the coolest part about the movie is how it ends. Which is what you'll see after watching it, and why I'm really REALLY excited about getting started on Dead Fantasy II-V. But more on that later.
Balance
I hope it's noticable. The subtle signs of me trying to become a better animator. Having a movie with humans instead of humanoids I wanted to portray less broader more precise movement. Though still with the anime stylings of movies such as Final Fantasy Advent Children. I spent a lot more focus this time around on making those sequences better in terms of movement & character weighting etc. It's nowhere by any means near professional animation quality. Just a step up I knew I should be taking. But doing so made others things fall back a tad. More obvious than the things I did better at, were where I fell short. My choices as the Director of this movie suffered in a way due to my effort as an animator. I knew this would happen, but I still don't like seeing the faults I made including camera work and pacing. It's a pretty simple formula too. I'd spend a good several hours/days getting a really good sequence done, then when it comes to the camera work, I don't want to lose any of those frames, even if it's a responsible choice to cut it out.
The imbalance of animator vs director this time around effected the overall movie, and I will know better next time.
Technical Achievements
This time around I hope it's also noticeable the visual jump I made as well. Through some clever compositing and setup, I was actually able to do these higher poly scenes with less rendertime than the usual. I won't trade away all my secrets (right away), but suffice it to say I've learned a hell of a lot. And it'll show in my future movies. These technical advancements usually come for me about every other movie, but with the amount I've gained on what I anticipate being my growth level. I probably won't have to make another jump for a good year at least. Let's hope I'll have time to do the next episodes. Because on top of all that I've just stated, I have a stable and exciting new career in the gaming industry this time around which take precedent over my sidework. Therefore I'm leaning towards the next movie I make being again under that banner of "Part Time Dreamer" where I will try to continue off ROAD 4 which has been sitting at "to be continued" almost a year now.
Speaking of that, so yea. This here "to be continued" totally intentional... uhh sorry 'bout that. That was the catcher, and you'll see soon enough (hopefully) because the next few movies in this series are going to be killer. If you're familiar with my method, I previz in my head, then go straight to application. The previz's for the movies following this one are all strong. This one on the other hand, was almost a pre-requisite to getting those movies started. In fact, a lot of the previz was me saying to myself "aaaaaand insert cool fighting sequence here." So it's also obvious why I wanted to get through this one so quickly, no credits, not drawn out opening. Just lots of action.
On top of that. Once I head into production for the next few movies there aren't going to be many technology jumps for me. Whenever I can stay away from improving my methods and technology within a movie, I'm always sure to put the directing and choreography first.
I guess overall though I'm dissapointed in myself I still manage to be proud of my work. Only because I'm familiar with the workarounds that are nescessary in getting things done.
Violence
One point I'd like to make, if you're unfamiliar with either franchise. Both the characters in Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive are pretty much superhuman. Able to take bullets and keep running. So at a glance with the actions performesd in this movie, what could be viewed as acts of violence, I'd like to state that hopefully the tone of this short if viewed as light. Under the moniker of "friendly competition." In that I tried to put smiling faces on the girls whenever it was appropriate. Honestly I don't like violence at all, what I love is choreography.
A special guy, lets call him Mr. Y
This movie and many of my others, wouldnt be possible without the under appreciated genius that is game modding. In this case finding the final fantasy models were made available by a guy out there who I get the feeling would rather remain anonymous. Lets call him mister Y. Though I found these models and tools on a modding forum, it was Mr. Y that made it possible. And because its my nature to want to credit the source, I sought him out and got a very good impression that Mr. Y is VERY cautious about legalities and issues regarding model hacking. I tried several times to sum up the courage to tell him of my project, but also in my nature is being strongly influenced by words. If he had object I would have probably not been able to finish this.
So Mr. Y if youre reading this, Id love to credit you, if thats not of your taste, then know that your work is greatly appreciated.

Ultimately I'm hoping people won't keep making those inevitable comparisons to Haloid. For one I know there'll be yet more qualms about using the Matrix music. But I can say that 100% of this movie was done without referencing a single clip of the Matrix. I was making movies before Haloid and I have dozens of movies that I'll be making in the future. I'm a bit uncertain as to what task I should undertake next. I should just as well take some time to manage my health/finances. But I can gaurauntee whatever movie comes next I'm fully equipped and ready for sheer awesomeness.

Dead Fantasy II
Added by montyoum on Mar 24, 2008 @ 3:46pm
Greetings friends, finally back again. Sorry it's a bit later than I promised, but hopefully my quick patches were able to bring this to you faster with minimal errors. First off I'd like to thank an online colleague Firia (firia.deviantart.com) for pointing me towards the soundtracks that was the founding inspriation for this sequence. I still remember that night when these images came to me. The course this epsiode was to take was serious destiny.
The first thing that comes to mind about the production of this vid is how much I wanted to give you the viewer more. I've described it heartfully many times as "bang for buck" or "giving the viewer their money's worth." What's that you say? "Oh silly Monty, why worry about giving me my money's worth for something that totally free? You so crazy!" Wellllll, I find it funny these days, how it seems that free still isn't quite free enough anymore, things like time and attention is a value that's hard to give up to just anything. And just as I learned (with Haloid) that making a good movie isn't enough for the viewer, but also making a good movie that they want. The relationship between filmaker and viewer of what you want and what I want to give you. One could hope someday I'll be in the position to make that video game motion picture that fully pays tribute to what the fans wish for while making the reasonable comprises of established filmaking.
You should know that I wasn't much a fan of Dead Fantasy 1. Not that I'm not proud of some moments, but in the listed episodes of this series it was the one I wanted to do the least. But obviously the only one that could come first because of what it established. When that one was done an over with, really the fight was only beginning. It should also be mentioned that this episode wasn't meant to happen, the original plan was for Tifa to show up and split them up into the three respective pairs following with Dead Fantasy II begin Yuna Vs Kasumi, Dead Fantasy III Tifa Vs Hitomi, Dead Fantasy IV beign Rikku VS Ayane. But to to the immense response of how much you all were looking forward to an even fight between the two teams, it wouldn't have been fair to the viewer to take something away just as soon as it was introduced. I thoroughly glad I opted to go this route, it just goes to show that you really can't be certain about what you do without considering who it is you making this for.
Character choice *Spoilers*
Ok so BTW, this movie was also still planned as a 3 on 3 start to finish, ending with the sequence that happens at about 5:40 and splitting into three different directions for the respective indivual battles to follow. But I was torn for quite some time as to whether or not I should expand the roster for many reasons. There was a great deal of response to DF 1 being "I wonder who'll show up next." And you should know that despite how it seems like I can do whatever I please for my movies. Being a good filmaker means there are rules that I need to follow as well.
1. Adding one Character to each side would make it 4 vs 4. Since 4 isn't a primary number I'd have to add 2 to each side, therefore making it a 5 vs 5. Now that would be crazy. Now there are plenty of characters to draw from on the FF side, but it's not that easy on the DOA side for rule #2...
2. This is a weapon battle. In classic RPG's a weapon is in a way part of the Character Yuna = Guns, Kasumi = Sword, Ayane = Dbl Sword (Weird purple blade she gets from defeating her father Genra from DOA3), Rikku = Blades. Now that's just about it for weapons on the DOA side, which brought about adding Hitomi = Fists, which was then Balanced with Tifa = Also Fists.
The problem now is even though there are plenty of girls on the FF side who have weapons, there are no girls left on the DOA side in which I can justify a weapon. Sure perhaps Lei Fang could wield a staff, or Christie could use a knife/wire ('cause she's an assassin) but none of it is really justified to their character via example. It's that level of thought that I try to put into my work. Even though the Ayane thing was a stretch, it was still recognizable to her character. So the next furthest thing would be to perhaps include one of the guys (read rule #3) or extend to universe to encompass other games in the DOA universe, like Ninja Gaiden... wait a sec... :?
3. No guys... they're harder to model/find parts for. Don't ask me why. Plus women are more fun (for now)
Therefore...
Mixing it up
I HATE PREDICTABILITY. Adding the expected characters only means that it'll give me the option of doing the same. So adding Rinoa/Kairi/Rachel was also able to give this movie flavor in both theme and function rather than repeating characters who'll interact in already established method with different skins. So Rinoa with wings or Kairi with enchanted weaponry, Rachel as the "Tank" character meant giving me options to keep it interesting.

And many thanks to the many interactions I go through on a daily basis that have no doubt effected this project.
I almost regret submitting this as a user movie seeing as the HD version which will soon follow will really showcase all the little details I worked to hard for.
And once you're done watching this, you'll notice I'm far from finished. At least 5 more episodes to follow in this series starting with Dead Fantasy III Rikku Vs Ayane. What was what I felt was perhaps the strongest one was also previously planned as Dead Fantasy IV is now officially moved to Dead Fantasy III and starting production ASAP. The reason for moving it forward was what I learned most when doing this movie as opposed to Dead Fantasy I. I shouldn't be making a movie unless it's something I absolutely love. Yuna Vs Kasumi & Tifa VS Hitomi were a tad weak compared to Rikku VS Ayane, I'll have to let those stew and come back only better before I decide to start production of them. But RIkku Vs Ayane on the other hand is perhaps one of the most powerful visions I've had and needs to be made the sooner the better.
You seriously have not seen anything yet.
