Nintendo’s New Console: Wii U
Jun 7, 2011 @ 3:13pm

Nintendo has announced its new controller/console/peripheral–the Wii U.

The main Wii U device featured at Nintendo’s presser is a controller with a 6.2-inch touchscreen, dual analog sticks, Wii-style D-pad and button layout and a motion-sensor. The Wii U controller also has front- and back-facing cameras and will support hardcore third-party titles such as Batman: Arkham City, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Darksiders II and Battlefield 3, directly on its own touchscreen.

The controller won’t support HD graphics, but the console itself runs HD in 1080p and has an internal flash memory that can be augmented with an SD card or USB.

After the Nintendo presser, Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo has the teams and development capabilities to make Zelda look like Uncharted on the new device.

Large, square and white, the controller looks more like a handheld console than an add-on, and the console it comes with looks more like an Xbox than a Wii. The controller can provide alternative perspectives to games played on the main television screen, through the actual console, and can continue games from the television seamlessly on its embedded screen. The controller does have to “talk” to the console in order to play games, meaning it doesn’t host them in its own, mobile hardware.

Nintendo previewed a few games on Wii U, including Legend of Zelda, Lego City Stories, Ninja Gaiden 3, Tekken and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, among other classic Wii and third-party titles.

Nintendo has not announced a price for the Wii U, but Fils-Aime said after the presser the launch would be about “value,” not price. The Wii U is expected to drop some time in 2012.
