One of the best-known footballers on the planet, famed for his free-kicks and accurate crosses from the right wing, David became a superstar with Manchester United before high-profile moves to Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.
With United he was a first-teamer at 17 and won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League. He won La Liga with Madrid in 2007 and the Western Conference with Galaxy in 2009. He was FIFA ‘World Player of the Year’ runner-up twice. For England he was included in the U18 squad for the European Finals hosted by England in 1993 but didn’t make the team! But appearances for the U18s and Under-21s followed before Glenn Hoddle gave him his first full cap in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in Moldova on 1 September 1996.
He went on to experience highs and lows in World Cup Finals, being red-carded against Argentina in ’98 but converting the penalty that beat the same opposition four years later. In 2006 he became the first Englishman to score in three different tournaments. He reached 100 caps in the Stade de France in March 2008, Capello’s second game in charge, and now has Peter Shilton’s record in his sights.
