Shaun is the adopted son of former England striker Ian Wright. He was released by Nottingham Forest at 15, possibly because he was too small, but Manchester City took him to Maine Road and his speed and directness from the right wing eventually brought him England honours.
He achieved a first team breakthrough in 1999-2000, making his debut in a League Cup tie against Burnley and then appearing in four Division One fixtures as City clinched promotion to the Premier League.
He became established in Kevin Keegan’s attacking side, making more than 30 appearances in each of the next four seasons and his first England senior call-up for a friendly against Ukraine at Newcastle on 18 August 2004. He replaced Nicky Butt after 55 minutes and ran from halfway to score a brilliant debut goal.
City’s ‘Young Player of the Year’ for four successive years moved to Chelsea in 2005 but found goals hard to come by, managing just four before returning to City three years later.
Shaun became an England regular in 2007-08, featuring in seven internationals and scoring the winner in Fabio Capello’s first game in charge against Switzerland at Wembley.
