Current club: Bristol City

David is a massive 6’5” goalkeeper who was born in Hertfordshire and initially made his name at Watford, clocking up 89 Division Two appearances in his early 20s.

Then he had seven seasons in the top flight with Liverpool, winning the League Cup in 1995, before further moves to Aston Villa, West Ham United, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

With Pompey, who he joined in 2006, he won The FA Cup and became the club’s first player to be capped for England at senior level for 23 years. He also made history on 14 February 2009 when he played in his 536th Premier League fixture to beat Gary Speed’s all-time record.

David won ten caps for the Under-21s before making his senior debut under Glenn Hoddle in a friendly against Mexico at Wembley on 29 March 1997. He kept a clean sheet.

England’s goalkeeping duties were chiefly shared by Seaman and Martyn in the next five seasons but David started 14 consecutive internationals from February 2003 and was first choice for the Euro 2004 Finals in Portugal, starting all four games.

After a period with Paul Robinson between the posts, he reclaimed the jersey under Fabio Capello and had won 48 caps by the end of 2008-09.

  • I do not agree with the previous comment in the slightest! Celtic is a 'has been club' and I believe you are living in the past, as Celtic won the European cup over 40 years ago!!! This 'great' team I believe would now struggle against teams such as Bristol City. David has been the best goalkeeper England have had in the past decade or so (since Seaman) and has achieved much more than most other professional goal keepers. He has earned the right to decide where he plays in the autumn of his career and I believe Bristol City in the Premiership next season will be a much better team to play for than Celtic. I am sorry that you feel so bitter about not having captured James at Celtic and i am sorry you will once again be the 2nd team in the SPL. ALWAYS BELIEVE BCFCBy James - Red Army (9 months ago)
  • I'm going to be brutally honest, I can't believe a guy being put forward as some national shining light has chosen to wind down his, at best, average career with Bristol City when he had the opportunity to be part of the history of one of the best clubs in the world in Glasgow Celtic. Despite the negative impression people have on the Scottish Premier League, the fact is that Celtic were, and always will be, the first British team to be Champions of Europe, and they can rest assured that no other British team will ever be able to emulate such a feat with a whole team of local players. So the fact that James has chosen to go through the motions with Bristol City as they just happen to be within a convenient distance from the family home in Exeter is rather pathetic, considering he could have rounded off his career with something significant. James talks about wanting to be a family man, and this being the most important thing to him, but ultimately if I was one of James' offspring I'd feel very much more proud if my father was playing for one of the most important, historic football teams that ever existed rather than a local team that happened to make things more convenient in terms of being handy as they're just up the road. At the end of the day I suppose that sums up an average footballer whose main achievement is stumbling upon the odd FA cup medal.By anonymous (10 months ago)
