Assault Victim Takes Cell-Phone Video Of Attacker

Oakland police Wednesday night were hoping some close-up cell phone video taken by a sexual assault victim of her attacker will help track down the suspect.

Police told KTVU the young woman wanted the video to be released to the public. She also wants the man who she recorded moments before he assaulted her caught.

The victim had the presence of mind to shoot video the suspect that clearly showed his face with her cell phone as he was robbing her.

It's the best look at a suspect investigators could ask for.

The 28-year-old woman started recording the video when she heard a noise and discovered this man in her home at around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday morning on the 900 block of Apgar Street in West Oakland.

You can even hear the woman talking to the man as he leaves with a box of her things.

"How did you get in here?," she can be heard asking the suspect in the clip.

But after the 13-second video clip ended, police said the attack began.

"He mumbles something like 'Ok, bye,' but what we do know is the suspect did not leave," explained OPD spokesperson Holly Joshi. "He did stay and he did sexually assault the victim."

Neighbors did not want to talk on camera, but some KTVU spoke with said they were disturbed by the crime that happened in broad daylight.

KTVU showed the video to Howard Bloom, who works with the organization Bay Area Women Against Rape.

While police urge everyone to first call 911 in a situation like this, bloom found no fault with this woman's decision. He hopes someone will recognize this face.

"Here you have the survivor videotaping and acting on her own behalf," said Bloom. "It's just incredibly powerful to have that presence of mind."

Police described the suspect as an African American male in his early 40s, about five feet nine inches tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds with a bald head and medium complexion.

At this point, investigators don't think the suspect is connected to any other recent assaults.
