Defense Freedom of Information Policy Office (DFOIPO)

Thank you for your interest in the DoD Freedom Of Information program. Under the authority of the DoD Chief FOIA Officer, Mr. Michael L. Rhodes, Director of Administration and Management (DA&M;), Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Defense Freedom of Information Policy Office is responsible for the formulation and implementation of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) policy for the Department of Defense (DoD).

The DoD FOIA program operates under a decentralized approach. No single office has access to all the DoD records and information. Since DFOIPO is a policy office, and not a Requester Service Center, you should not send a FOIA request to us. For maximum efficiency in using FOIA, we suggest you read the DoD Freedom of Information Handbook. Crafting a proper FOIA request will reduce the response time to you. To help you direct your requests to the proper office, we have prepared a list of DoD Service Centers. In addition, we recommend spending a few moments reviewing the appropriate DoD Reading Room to see if the information you want is already available. The "search" function is another resource to find DoD specific content.

HOW TO SUBMIT A FOIA REQUEST

Each DoD Component, to include the Military Services, Department of Defense Agencies, and Combatant Commands, responds to requests for its own records. Instructions for submitting a FOIA request may be found in the DoD Freedom of Information Handbook or by visiting the individual DoD Service Centers websites.
