England’s Leighton Baines hopes his display on Saturday coupled with a good pre-season can see him challenge for a regular place in the Three Lions team.

The Everton left-back played the majority of the game with Swizerland after replacing Ashley Cole in the first half and played a part in England’s equalising goal with a chest-down to fellow sub Ashley Young.

Now he’s keen to make the most of his summer break before the new campaign gets going and England’s remaining qualifiers take place.

"The rest is important for everyone, it can take a lot out of you if you're playing regularly,” he told FATV. “So it's important we get rest now.

"I want to come back, hit the ground running, have a good pre-season now and hopefully start the new season well.”

England are next in action in August when they face Holland at Wembley before the qualification run-in starts in September.

"We have a friendly here at the start of the season and all of those games are important, because the remaining qualifiers are massive now,” he added.
