Robert Brownhall Story Bridge at Dusk (detail) 2010, City of Brisbane Collection, Museum of Brisbane

Brisbane born and educated painter Robert Brownhall is locally inspired. Since his first art-student exhibition he has garnered a loyal following, given the resonance of his largely South East Queensland subject matter.

His quirky style and signature bird's-eye view of scenes, characterised by strong a connection to place, was informed by his earlier day job as a tree lopper. The moody nocturnes, broad sweep panoramas and gritty vignettes of urban life witnessed by Brownhall and translated into paint, have for many years extended the poetry long associated with Brisbane.

This exhibition at Brisbane City Council's Museum of Brisbane, is the first survey of his work and encompasses twenty years of painting. It records the changing face of Brisbane during one of the most dynamic periods of its history.
