I love market shopping but I am getting sick and tired of paying more for the same produce that is available elswhere for a lower price. Farmers are always complaining they do not get a fair price for their goods from the big supermarket chains and I agree. I come from a long line of farmers and it is true.
But for farmers to then come to the markets and charge more for their produce than the supermarkets makes a mockery of their claims that we are being ripped off.
Give us a fair go!
The only markets in Brisbane where I feel I am getting a bargain are at West End ( although how long that lasts now they have been handed to the same NSW firm who run the appalling Southbank Markets) and at Mt Gravatt Markets.
I used to love going along to Jan Powers Farmers Market but then I became annoyed with everyone bringing their dogs along and then standing in the middle of the walkways chatting to their friends, neighbours, etc. instead of going off to the side. I think they are very rude. Also I think that prices have gone over the top there as well.
I have to ask - what is the requirement for having a stall at so called "farmers markets"? Does one have to be a farmer? I would really doubt it. Last time I bought fruit and veg at "farmers markets" I asked if they were local or grown locally. It seems that the stall holder was just a reseller. Under that theory, you or I could go to the rocklea markets and buy a whole heap of produce and then resell at a "farmer's market". That's not a farmer. Seems to be misleading and deceptive conduct to me.
