Stanford Beats Cal State Fullerton 1-0

Jordan Pries limited Cal State Fullerton to two hits in 7 2-3 innings, closer Chris Reed got the final four outs, and Stephen Piscotty homered in Stanford's controversial 1-0 victory Saturday night in the NCAA Fullerton Regional.

Fullerton's Greg Velazquez appeared to single in a run in the fifth, but the third-base umpire ruled left fielder Tyler Gaffney made a diving catch for the third out. Replays clearly showed the ball hit the ground.

"I came in full speed," Gaffney said. "It died down, I dove for it and I did my best to get there."

Fullerton coach Dave Serrano downplayed the call.

"That's baseball," Serrano said. "We had the misfortune of being on the wrong end it. You can't blame it on the call."

Pries (6-5) struck out six.

"It was all about filling up the zone and keeping the ball down," Pries said.

Piscotty homered to left in the bottom of the sixth.

"I got a fastball and put my best swing on it," Piscotty said.

The Titans threatened in the top of the eighth, but Reed stranded a runner on third. They also had a leadoff runner on in the ninth, but pinch-hitter Casey Watkins was picked off at first trying to steal.

Fullerton's Noe Ramirez (8-4) allowed four hits and struck out a season-high 12.

He wanted the pitch back that Piscotty smashed for his third homer of the season.

"It was a mistake," Ramirez said about the pitch. "I was trying to throw a first-pitch strike. I completely missed it. It was a good outing. In this game, it wasn't good enough."

Fullerton (41-16) will play Illinois on Sunday in an elimination game, with the winner advancing to face Stanford (34-20).

"Both pitchers pitched phenomenal," Stanford coach Mark Marquess said. "It's tough for either pitcher to lose. ... It's great to beat anyone, whether it's a No. 1 seed or any team. At this stage, you've just got to win."
