A midfielder/winger born in Sunderland, Adam made his name with Middlesbrough and has now made it into the England squad after some eye-catching displays for current club Manchester City.
He was in Boro’s first team as a teenager, scoring once in 13 Premier League appearances in the 2005-06 season. He had loan spells with Leeds United and Watford and though he featured in 26 Premier League matches in 2008-09, their relegation season, he had only been in the starting line-up on ten occasions.
Adam made his debut for Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21s in the opening international of 2007-08, substituting for Michael Kightly against Romania at Ashton Gate, and collected six more caps in that season. He finished on 19 caps at that level after featuring in four out of five matches in the 2009 UEFA Championship Finals in Sweden.
One of the country’s most talented young players switched to Manchester City in the January transfer window in a deal worth about £7m to Boro and some scintillating displays on the right wing immediately marked him out as a possible England player of the future.
