Scott Carson

Scott Carson

Scott, a 6’3” goalkeeper, was born in Whitehaven and began his professional career with Leeds United in 2002.

During his time in Yorkshire he made three first team appearances and broke into the England Under-21s squad.

He moved to Liverpool in 2004 to provide competition for Jerzy Dudek and made his debut for the Reds the following year. While at Anfield he was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic and it was at the London club he enjoyed his most extensive first team run, playing 36 times for the Addicks in the 2006-07 season and being named the Charlton Athletic Supporters' Club Player of the Year.

That summer he was part of the Under-21 team that went to the European Championship in Holland and it was here he surpassed the then record for Under-21 appearances, claiming his 29th and final cap in the epic semi-final against the hosts that saw Carson face 16 penalties as England were beaten in a shoot-out.

He made his England Senior debut five months later in a friendly against Austria and retained the No.1 shirt for the crucial European Championship Qualifier against Croatia a week later as the Three Lions lost 3-2 and failed to qualify for the Finals.

Carson signed for West Bromwich Albion before the 2008-09 season and although they were relegated from the Premier League he helped them make an instant return to the top flight in 2010.
