Nikkei Confirms Wii 2 Controller Details

Six inch screen with camera for Nintendo's newfangled input device.

Posted on 06.04.2011 at 02:39, by Anoop Gantayat

A Wii 2 controller concept image from I believe IGN. A six inch screen would presumably require a different layout from this.

In advance of Nintendo's E3 press conference next week, Nikkei has leaked out details on the Wii successor. The report (registration required) mirrors much of what has surfaced over the past few weeks.

Wii 2 will feature a new type of controller that includes a touch screen. The controller will give tablet-like controls to games, tapping the touch panel to control the characters on your television, for instance. The controller can also be used as a portable game machine.

The touch panel on the controller is six inches. The controller itself has a built in rechargeable battery and includes a camera. The camera can be used for a variety of play opportunities -- for instance, a player making an avatar of himself for use in a game.

Nikkei says that Wii 2 could be released as early as mid 2012. The site lists the system as "Wii successor console."

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story miswrote the launch period listed in the Nikkei report as "latter half of 2012." The story actually says the system could be released in mid 2012.

People are complaining about something we haven't even seen yet? And this is before we even know whether Nikkei is sourcing the rumours we already know of, because you know frankly, we could ALL be wrong.
Its Nintendo, they've had pretty good odds of late, so I wouldn't be too worried about them yet.

Its what they do, Risk Vs Reward, now don't tell me you're complaining about the success of the DS and Wii now!! Devs are stuck in tradition, and thats fine, because 1st Party Nintendo IP means more money for Nintendo.
As for Sony and Microsoft, well neither are doing sufficient enough business in their other product categories to motivate confidence in their new gen. of consoles. You are aware of Sony and MS's stock prices right?

These were my sentiments exactly.
If the console's hardware is competetive with the PS3/360, I can't imagine this console going on sale for less than $500.
I'd be surprised if the controller alone came in under $150.

This whole thing sounds like Nintendo is going way overboard. If the public perceives this is a gimmick, which I'm anticipating, that combined with 3DS's lackluster sales, could spell an end to Nintendo hegemony in the market.
Oh lord hear our prayers.

Wiimotes cost a freaking fortune as it is; do they seriously expect people to want to spend potentially a lot more for *controllers*, rather than the system and games(the important parts)?

If you are that lazy... Then yes, it's a bad idea
Sounds interesting... Nintendo, as always, looking for innovate in some way. The only thing I wonder if what's going to happen with the motion controls?
A Six-Axis by Nintendo? Mmm PASS.

I'm not sure you'll have to. Think about the NGP which has touch pads on the back.
@NanaMiku: Hahah, yeah, but I mean most people I know with Wiis have a full compliment of controllers. They only really use them when they have company over.

Then if it can be used as a portable gaming machine whats the point of a 3ds!

It's gonna be "bring your own controller" for sure, I don't see people stocking up on 4 of these like they do with Wii-motes.

tablet-like? that means capacitive touch screen. i'm really worried how much it's gonna cost

This controller sounds better than the 3ds

More like Dreamcast 2! But in all seriousness, having a "bottom screen" for a console is going to be great. I just could not get behind the Wii's motion controls.

Eh... not really sure how I feel about this.
The controller can also be used as a portable game machine.

This, however, sound awesome.

6 inch? what is that thing? a mammoth of a controller?, would love to see people graving a more than 7 inch controller in their hands :(, if the vita is a big´ss controller already, don´t see the size of that thing going bomb.
