Current generation Wii.

After weeks of rumor and speculation, Nintendo has formally announced Wii's successor. The followup to the system that, according to Nintendo, has sold 86.01 million systems as of March 31, will be announced at the E3 gaming expo in June, Nintendo said. The system will be released in calendar 2012.

Nintendo made similar announcement of the 3DS ahead of E3 last year. Unlike with that system, where Nintendo confirmed the system's 3D capability, the company did not provide any hints about the Wii followup system, nor did it give an actual name, instead just referring to it as "Wii's Successor System."

Attendees at E3, which runs from June 7 through 9, will be able to sample the system, Nintendo said. It will also announce specifics about the system at that time.

Nintendo also released its fiscal 2010 earnings report today. Sales targets for the new system are not included in forecasts for the current fiscal year (ending March 2012), the company said.

  • We will have to see whether the alleged "leaks" of the Wii's successor are true or just false rumors. Also, whether the succesor's name is actually codenamed "Project Cafe."

  • Developers could no longer offer surprises with the Wii? Did they ever?
  • It may not be wise for the Wii's successor to be released during the holiday season as Nintendo should have time to prepare it for release. It should not be rushed to market. Not only that, but supporting many systems in the market may be a problem, so next fiscal year is good.
  • @Astraea
    No More Heroes.
  • Wii Developers surprised users with sub GameCube quality graphics and gameplay. Does that count?

That being said, stupid fiscal years, the Stream is at least a year away, too early to get excited.
  • @kamiboy:
ZING! That's actually how I feel about the PS3, the graphics are better, but I'm hard pressed to find games that are as fun as anything for the PS2. This generation of consoles has been a disappointment on the whole.Even if the system had better graphics, would developers even know what to do with them?

  • well if you look at Nintendo's cycle it would make sense:

    NES (1985-1994)
    SNES ( 1991-1996)
    N64 (1996-2001)
    GAMECUBE ( 2001-2007)
    WII ( 2006-2012)
    ???? ( 2012-2017)

well except for NEW and SNES(the japanese one arrive a few months)

i hope it BC along with GC, will we be able to use gamecube controller and other controllers such as classic controller and such?
