Tempers were running high after Kevin Ahearn (Heavy Hitters BC) was awarded a close decision over Michael Diaz (Juan Laporte BC) in their 141-pound novice Daily News Golden Gloves matchup Wednesday night at the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Center in the Bronx. Ahearn, 17, and Diaz, also 17, of Manhattan traded punches throughout a bout that could have gone either way.

Midway through the second round, Marcus Browne, perhaps the top amateur boxer in the city, asked a ringside observer how he was doing. "You're looking reckless," said Shemuel Pagan, who won the Daily News Golden Gloves five times and is now a pro.

Oliva, whose trainer was unable to attend due to a hip surgery, went to work immediately from the opening bell on Anderson, who seemed to have no answers. Decked out in the Italian colors, Oliva scored a standing eight count in the opening round en route to victory.

Registration begins for 84th Annual Daily News Golden Gloves, the historic amateur boxing tournament

Last year more than 800 fighters registered for the event, which is considered the largest and most historic amateur boxing tournament on the planet. Golden Gloves director Brian Adams is hoping to see a rise in female registrants in the 2011 edition of the event, since 2012 will mark the first time that women can qualify for medal events at the Olympic Games.
